Chicano/a Culture
To encourage critical thinking, the Spanish-language seminar, “La otra América: La cultura chicana en Estados Unidos” analyzes both the Chicana/o culture and literary discourse, characterized by its social realism, such as the language of journalism in the Spanish press. The purpose is to reflect on the migratory movements of Mexico to the US in search of the "American Dream" and of Africa to Europe in search of "El Dorado” – both in the same direction: the North.
The instructor María del Carmen Suñén Bernal from the Center for Modern Languages at Leuphana University has shared her experiences with Aura Luz Duffé Montalván, an instructor from the University of Rennes (France). Together they presented a paper, “The Chicano Presence in the United States – A Transferable Experience to Europe?” at the First Congress of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language. The conference took place at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. from June 6 – 8, 2014.
