The second edition of the "Werkstatt der Mutigen" will take place at Utopia on May 27th.

What to expect

The “Werkstatt der Mutigen” (Workshop of the Brave) is part of a nationwide initiative that explores new forms of collaboration between politics and civil society. At its core is a shift in perspective: instead of discussing problems in the abstract, local changemakers work together with political decision-makers to develop practical solutions for concrete challenges.

On May 27th 2026, this format will return to Lüneburg. Building on the first workshop in April 2025, representatives from local and federal government, committed civil society initiatives, as well as academia and business, will come together at Utopia with the goal of becoming operational and sharing responsibility.

The focus is on “social innovations”—broadly understood as new developments in products, processes, or organizational forms that contribute to addressing societal challenges. They are an essential component of a livable city and attractive urban development. The City of Lüneburg’s sustainability report emphasizes that Lüneburg is characterized by “innovation and dynamic growth” as well as “a vibrant and engaged civil society.” However, many innovative drivers in Lüneburg are under significant financial pressure, operating on the brink of survival.

For Lüneburg and the Werkstatt der Mutigen, this raises concrete questions: What room for action does the municipality have? Where is support needed from the state or federal level? And in which areas can civil society itself become more effective? Topics of discussion include sustainable financing models, municipal framework conditions, and forms of cross-sector collaboration.
