Green Tourism
Assessment of the sustainability of travel chains
The aim of the project is to develop a model that can be used to assess the sustainability of a holiday trip. The focus lies on packaged holiday trips.
Based on the already developed processes for labelling the sustainability of hotels (project Green Travel Transformation) we take the next step, namely the assessment and labelling of the sustainability of the entire trip. In order to be able to assess the entire trip, a model for the objective evaluation of the sustainability of holiday trips must be developed. It has to be clarified which data can be used on the basis of what sources and how the summary to an overall assessment can carried out. Ultimately, the relevant information must be made available to customers so that, if possible, more and more holidaymakers are confronted with the issue of sustainability of holiday travel and change their behaviour accordingly. For communication with holidaymakers, a label must be developed that is not only accepted by the tour operators but is also credible and easy for the traveller to understand, in order to promote a uniform language for the industry in the long term.
Targeted information on the website and advice from travel agency staff on how to achieve sustainable travel will increase the sense of responsibility, efficiency and, where required, sufficiency. Accordingly, two aspects are achieved: travellers become aware of the advantages as well as the opportunities of sustainable travel, enabling them to make a targeted sustainable booking.
