Masters in Sustainability Science
Studying at Leuphana University Lüneburg
Be one of the first students in one of the four new Master's programmes in Sustainability Science starting at Leuphana in the winter semester 2024/25:
Why Sustainability Science
A renowned faculty - four new programmes
Sustainable development is often described as the most important challenge facing humanity in the 21st century. In society, politics and business, many people are working intensively on regulations, strategies and measures as well as in concrete practical projects to realise sustainable development. Nevertheless, many sustainability problems are intesifying. Sustainability Science at Leuphana University has therefore set itself the task of investigating the causes of a lack of sustainability in four research-oriented, inter- and transdisciplinary Master's programmes, as well as addressing possible paths and the effectiveness of different approaches to shaping sustainable development.
- Sustainability Science: Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Society (M.Sc.)
- Sustainability Science: Entrepreneurship, Agency and Leadership (M.A.)
- Sustainability Science: Governance and Law (M.A.)
- Sustainability Science: Resources, Materials and Chemistry (M.Sc.) (Start: Winter semester 25/26)
The Master's programmes in Sustainability Science at Leuphana are embedded in the Faculty of Sustainability, which is an international pioneer in the field of sustainability research. Studying at Leuphana enables students to learn from top international researchers and work with the latest research findings. The interdisciplinary nature of the programmes and the Graduate School with its Complementary Studies offer the opportunity to broaden one's own horizons with other disciplines and contribute to a sustainable transformation with an individual profile.
Student experiences
Current and former students of the Master's programme Sustainability Science (M.Sc.), the predecessors of the four new Masters, talk about their studies at Leuphana, their time in Lüneburg and their future career path in interviews, for example in the (German language) podcast Karriere leupht.

Why Lüneburg
The city of Lüneburg impresses with its student flair and a wide range of leisure and cultural activities. Whether theatre, cinemas, the lunatic festival on campus, exhibitions in the museums or galleries, there is hardly a wish left unfulfilled. Lüneburg, situated between the Elbe and the heath, offers many worthwhile excursion destinations. And in the thousand-year-old salt town, the spectrum of leisure activities ranges from the Lüneburg salt thermal baths to numerous pubs and restaurants in the old town. Another great advantage of student life in Lüneburg is that everything is close together: the university, the city centre with its numerous leisure activities, the inviting spa gardens, shopping facilities and student residences. At the same time, major cities such as Hamburg or Hanover can be reached by train in no time at all.
Here you can find more reasons to choose Lüneburg.
Student involvement
The university welcomes all those who actively contribute, make their talents available and are also socially involved. There are plenty of opportunities to do this in Lüneburg: as a tutor, for example, you can pass on your enthusiasm for certain academic issues to others in the teaching environment. And you can help shape the university yourself in the university policy committees. The numerous student initiatives and projects offer the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of areas: Be it with the campus newspaper, in working with international students, in a social or a subject-specific project. If you have a musical streak, you are welcome to join the big band or the university choir. The AStA also offers opportunities to get involved in culture or university politics: for example, you can join the theatre group, show your favourite films in the university cinema, produce your own radio programme in the radio department or plan and organise cultural events in the cultural department.
It's entirely up to you which projects you want to throw yourself into alongside your studies. One thing is certain: a whole range of institutions in Lüneburg are happy to welcome new participants with good ideas and a breath of fresh air.
