The Programme
As part of the programme, a select number of motivated students (up to 10 per year) have the opportunity to complete their second year at our partner institution, the University of Groningen. This second year offers a distinctive ‘Top Down’ perspective on environmental psychology.
In contrast to Sustainability Psychology's focus on human-made systems within broader ecological contexts, Environmental Psychology examines the interaction between individuals and their natural or built environment.
At the University of Groningen these students will deepen their methodological knowledge in the module Advanced Research Methods in Social and Organisational Psychology. In addition, more disciplinary expertise is acquired in the modules Environmental Psychology, Advanced Topics in Environmental Psychology, Designing Interventions, and Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Sustainability.
For further insight into the specific course content at the University of Groningen, please visit the website of the Environmental Psychology programme.
Students who complete the optional second year of study in Groningen will write their Master’s thesis in the fourth semester in consultation with a supervisor from each of the cooperating universities, Leuphana and the University of Groningen. They receive two Master’s degrees - one in 'Psychology & Sustainability' and one in 'Environmental Psychology'.

Partner universities
Leuphana University of Lüneburg
Leuphana originated in 2006 from the unique opportunity to rethink the concept of a university. It is a foundation under public law and regarded to be a place fostering the desire to know, ingenuity, individual growth, and public engagement. With over 9,500 students, Leuphana is a medium-sized German university with about 180 professors and about 400 research assistants.
The three guiding principles of Humanism, Sustainability and Application-Orientation shape its academic mission. Studying at Leuphana is organised in different schools, which is still exceptional in Germany. The College, the Graduate School and the Professional School provide the opportunity for individual and autonomous learning in an inspiring academic community.
All Master's programmes at Leuphana Graduate School pursue the overarching goal of connecting interdisciplinary education with professional depth, research activities and practical orientation. This connection enables students to combine interdisciplinary knowledge with personal interests targeted at their future careers.
Leuphana's climate-neutral campus is a vibrant place for academic life. A milestone in the dynamic campus development is the new Central Building, inaugurated in 2017, which was mutually designed by Daniel Libeskind and Leuphana students.
University of Groningen
The University of Groningen is an internationally-oriented university with a rich academic tradition. Since its establishment in 1614, the university has brought forward striving academics, like the first female student, the first Dutch astronaut and various Nobel Prize winners. In 1877 the University became State University (Rijksuniversiteit) and thereby continued its educational activities, but also took on research responsibilities resulting in big expansions.
By now, there are 32,700 students of more than 120 nationalities enrolled at the University of Groningen. Approximately 479 professors and 5,000 employees work at the university. Overall, the University of Groningen is the third-biggest university in the Netherlands. The University of Groningen currently offers 125 Master's programmes, from which 18 are “Top Rated Programmes” and 45 Bachelor degree programmes. In addition, the University of Groningen is proud to number among the world’s top universities, especially for the subject of psychology.
Application and Requirements
You can find all information about the admission and requirements, the application and the selection procedure (that requires applicants to hand in a letter of motivation) on our "Admission and Requirements" page.
To be able to start the second year at the University of Groningen, all ECTS of the first year at Leuphana University have to be completed.
All applicants to the programme, regardless of whether they intend to apply for the ‘Top Down’ study track in Groningen, must meet the admission criteria set by both Leuphana and the University of Groningen.
While a preliminary selection of students interested in the ‘Top Down’ track is made at the beginning of the programme, the final decision is made during the first semester. This selection is based on student preferences and the limited availability of placements. Students who are not selected for the double degree option will complete their studies at Leuphana and will receive a single Master’s degree upon graduation.
