Management & Engineering – The Programme


Both the strategic design and the operation of efficient production and logistics processes require comprehensive knowledge of the interrelations between technology, business and management. The deep understanding of engineering sciences regarding different characteristics is thereby seen as a central success factor for the management of industrial companies. The study programme therefore includes management skills with conveying scientific methods from the field of engineering sciences.


In the study programme Management & Engineering, we offer two profiles that address the student´s specific prior knowledge from their completed Bachelors degree. Overall the program is addressing the current requirements of industrial companies in the age of Industry 4.0. The profile “production systems” is aimed at students with a non-technical - generally business-oriented - first degree and offers a comprehensive introduction to the basics of engineering. In contrast, the profile “production engineering” is designed for students with a technical first degree - generally engineering or industrial engineering.

Both profiles offer targeted and contemporary education in relation to the challenges in the areas of production, development and research, always including the connection to the management. In addition to the fundamental aspects of engineering sciences, such as the relation between materials and production processes as well as the associated production logistics, digitalisation is a central component of the study programme. Among other things, you will deal with questions of information technology, learn the basics of programming and understand the concepts behind the terms Industry 4.0 or smart factory.

Interdisciplinary study elements

All students in the Masters programme Management complete the Management Studies as an interdisciplinary study element. In a total of three modules, students deepen their specialist skills in the area of management knowledge, entrepreneurial thinking and action and apply these skills in the current context of constantly changing structures: in the first semester, "Organization, Strategy & Innovation" is illustrated using case studies; in the second semester, the area of tension of "Digitalization" is dealt with from various disciplinary perspectives; and in the third semester, the focus is on "Entrepreneurship", where students develop concrete business ideas for companies and practice partners, for example.

The cross-Masters Complementary Studies also impart broad academic and scientifically reflective foundations in three modules. Due to the special orientation of these courses, students get to know ways of thinking and working methods across disciplinary boundaries and can thus develop different ways of solving problems in science and practice.

Masters thesis

The preparation of the masters thesis and the obligatory master forum take place in the final semester. The thesis is ideally written at the Institute for Product and Process Innovation (PPI) or at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. In agreement, it is also possible to write the thesis in cooperation with an industrial company following coordination with the supervising professor. The aim is to work on topics relevant to research or practice on the basis of scientific methods.

Semester abroad

If you are planning a stay abroad, you should choose the third semester, because the possibilities for recognition of study achievements at cooperating universities can be broader. The fourth or final semester is also suitable for a stay abroad if there is an opportunity for a masters project at a partner university or company.

The study programme Management & Engineering offers a very good basis for starting your career with industrial and (high) technology companies if you aim for a leadership position in an industrial company where the interrelationships of technology and management are relevant.
