Lateral Entry

Winter:
EU degrees: 1 April to 1 June
Non-EU degrees: 1 April to 1 May

Summer:
15 December to 15 January

Step 1: Provide proof of your first degree

Bachelors degree or equivalent

To prove that you are suitable to take a master's degree at Leuphana University, you are required to hold a Bachelor degree or at least an equivalent qualification. The equivalence of foreign degrees is determined according to the assessment proposals of the Central Office for Foreign Education and assessed by uni-assist in the application procedure. Please also be aware of the exceptions.

Application without a Bachelors degree

If you have not yet completed your degree at the time of application, you can still apply. To do so, you must prove that you have successfully completed at least 81% of the total required workload in your current course. Depending on the degree programme, 81% applies in relation to the total course credit of 180 CP = 145 CP or 210 CP = 170 CP. Please complete this form as proof of your progress and ask the examination office at your university to verify it.

If the Bachelors degree certificate is not yet available when you apply for a master's programme by the application deadline of June 1st, you must submit it by March 31st of the following year at the end of your first semester. If the proof is not provided in the prescribed time, the preliminary admission will be revoked: At the same time, you will be exmatriculated from the study programme.

If you are completing your Bachelors degree at Leuphana, please submit your Transcript of Records instead of the form.

Exceptions

International Law of Global Security, Peace and Development: For a scholarship, the degree certificate must be available at the time of application in January.

Work and Organizational Psychology: The degree certificate must be received by September in the year in which you are applying.

Step 2: Check Consecutive relevance

Scientific Requirements

At Leuphana Graduate School we offer consecutive Masters programmes. This means that you can only apply for a specific programme if your Bachelors degree was in that same discipline and the Masters degree programme builds on and deepens your level of knowledge from your first degree. Previous knowledge of a subject required for a consecutive Masters degree programme is proven by a sufficient number of credit points according to ECTS (CP) in an identical or related discipline.

On the basis of the list of consecutive subjects, you can get a first impression of whether your first degree is subject-related. Please use this list of subjects and the degree programme profile to independently check whether your previous academic qualifications are sufficient for an application. The selection committee decides on your academic suitability for a Masters degree programme on the basis of your Transcript of Records. The committee meets at the end of the application period.

Please note: An individual assessment of your consecutivity cannot be made in advance. There is no possibility to make up credit points not achieved during the master's programme. The necessary credit points must be available at the time of application.

Does your transcript show no credit points?

If your transcript does not show any credit points, please ask your responsible examination office to provide a document clearly stating what percentage of the total study programme your respective courses accounted for.

Step 3: Provide Language Proficiency

Another prerequisite for all programmes (except teacher training) is proficiency in English. For the German-language study programmes, proof of German language skills must also be provided. Please also note the exceptions.

Step 4: Understand the selection procedure

Advance Quota for Management & Entrpreneurship and Management & Sustainable Accounting and Finance

For the Master's degree programmes "Management & Entrepreneurship" and "Management & Sustainable Accounting and Finance", an advance quota of 20 percent is set up for foreign nationals and stateless persons who are not treated the same as Germans according to § 1 Para. 2 Sentence 3 NHZVO.

Points for admission in the current winter semester

If there are more suitable applicants than available places for a certain study programme, these places are awarded according to a selection procedure. Certain selection criteria are taken into account, each of which is converted into points. A ranking list is drawn up on the basis of the number of points that are awarded. In case of equal scores, the ranking on the list will be determined by lot (L). Please also note the exceptions.

In the application procedure for the actual winter term the following total points lead to admission:

    Study programmeTotal points
    Culture & Organization22 points
    Management & Data Science23 points
Management & Sustainable Accounting and Finance4 points
    Sustainability Science8 points / L
    Psychology and Sustainability18 points
Public Economics, Law and Politics4 points / L

For all programmes not listed, no ranking took place within the selection procedure. The information is without guarantee. The point values with which admission is granted vary from year to year.

    Selection Procedure Criteria

Depending on the programme, the following criteria are taken into account in the selection process:

    • Final Grade/GPA of Bachelors degree
    • Award of scholarships
    • Experience abroad
    • Voluntary work
    • Ranking among top students

    Final Grade/ GPA

A maximum of 30 points can be achieved with the final grade. If the final grade is not yet available at the time of application, but a minimum of 81 % of all relevant exams has been completed successfully, the preliminary grade point average (GPA) will be considered in the selection procedure.

81 % of the relevant examinations of a three-year Bachelor degree usually correspond to 145 Credit Points according to ECTS. The GPA submitted in the application process will be considered in the selection procedure, even if the final grade subsequently differs from the preliminary GPA.

Does my first degree fulfill the requirements of consecutivity for my desired study program?

The selection committee decides on the relevance of your first degree. It will review your application after the application deadline. For legal reasons, we are unable to carry out a preliminary check of your documents. Please feel free to use the information material, especially the list of consecutive subjects on our website, to make your own realistic assessment of your suitability.

Can I catch up on missing CP for consecutivity in the Masters programme?

No, unfortunately you cannot. Consecutivity is an admission requirement and must be proven at the time of application.

Does work experience in the field of the Masters programme also count as proof of consecutivity?

No, work experience does not count for consecutiveity. This is because consecutiveity requires that your Bachelors degree (or equivalent degree) is relevant to the subject, so that your Masters programme can build on your previous degree. Work experience cannot contribute to this.

How do I prove the 30 CP related to sustainability for the Masters programme Sustainability Science?

First of all, we would like to note that the requirement of 30 credit points (CPs) related to sustainability is deliberately kept vague, as in principle applicants from the most diverse disciplines should be given the chance to be admitted to the Masters programme Sustainability Science.

In order to demonstrate sustainability relevance, it is of course optimal if the relevance is already visible in the course title, although this is not absolutely necessary. The sustainability relation can also be demonstrated in the module description. It is therefore always advisable to include the module descriptions. CPs acquired through the Bachelor's thesis can be counted for consecutivity, as long as the topic is relevant to the subject, internships unfortunately cannot. However, the required CPs for the proof of consecutiveity do not necessarily have to be proven by the subject with whose degree you are applying for the Masters programme, but can also be provided by additionally taken courses. You can therefore also prove the missing CPs through modules from another degree programme.

Do I have to submit a CV and a letter of motivation?

No, a CV and a letter of motivation do not have to be submitted and are not included in the selection process. There are exceptions for International Law of Global Security, Peace and Development and Work & Organizational Psychology, which you can find on the pages of the study programmes.

Why can't I find Leuphana on the UniAssist website?

You will not find Leuphana with its degree programmes on the Uni-Assist website until the start of our application periods, because you can only apply then.

Can I apply to more than one Masters programme?

In principle, you can only apply for one Masters programme of the Leuphana Graduate School.

I have a different English certificate than the ones listed. Do you accept these as well?

No, only the listed tests you can find under the section “English proficiency” are valid.

What does a semester at Leuphana cost?

The semester contribution for one semester currently amounts to 367.55 Euros. This includes, among other things, the ticket for public transportation, fees for the administration and the “Studierendenwerk” (student union). There are no other tuition fees at Leuphana.
