Straight Outta Regina – Indigenous Hip-Hop in Canada
16. Nov
Stefan Benz (University of Bonn) will speak as part of the "Maple Leaf and Stars and Stripes Lecture Series" on 16 Nov. in C 40.606 from 18:15 to 19:45.
Counter to mainstream narratives, Indigenous artists have been shaping hip-hop culture from its inception. As a creative platform used to amplify marginalized voices, hip-hop has allowed Indigenous artists to express the political, social, and cultural concerns of their communities. They have used it to protest and resist settler colonial oppression and to negotiate Indigenous political and cultural sovereignty. This talk introduces the work of contemporary First Nations rappers Drezus (Plains Cree), JB The First Lady (Nuxalk / Onondaga), and T-Rhyme (Dene / Cree), whose music gives voice not only to urban Indigenous experiences.
