In Kenya, where homosexuality is still a punishable offense, the film was initially banned from being shown. It only changed when director Wanuri Kahiu filed a lawsuit. Through her film Rafiki, the director contributed to the discourse about homosexuality in Kenya.
Rafiki (Swahili for “friend”) tells a story about friendship and love relationships, joie de vivre and love of freedom. Kena (Samantha Mugatsia) and Ziki (Sheila Munyiva) are good friends despite political problems between their families and resistance from their conservative society. When the two fall in love, they have to choose between happiness and security
After a short bilingual introduction by the Self-Access Center, the film will be shown in its original version with German subtitles. Admission is free!
