The German academic system

The lecture provides an overview of the most important institutions in the German academic system. It is aimed at anyone interested in gaining an in-depth understanding of our academic system and the connections between university and non-university institutions of research and teaching, academic funding and academic policy.
Germany offers an unusually diverse landscape of research and teaching institutions. In addition, research funding and science policy institutions have a strong influence on these institutions. To gain a deep understanding of the science system, it is also important to consider the principle of academic freedom and the ideas of ‘New Public Management’. The lecture aims to provide an overview of this complex system and a presentation of its systemic interrelationships. By presenting the historical differentiation of the German science system since 1945, the special situation and unusual diversity of the institutions in the context of federalism will be presented in an easily comprehensible and engaging manner.

The event can be held in German or English. Please indicate your preference for English in the comments.
