New MA Degree Programme: Culture and Organisation

2020-03-10 The English-language degree programme "Cultural Studies: Culture and Organisation" at the Graduate School examines the interaction of culture, society and organisation. The four-semester programme is headed by Prof. Dr. Timon Beyes and Prof. Dr. Volker Kirchberg. Applications are welcome from May 2020.

Is there a distinct police culture? How is organisation performed by means of digital media? Who produces culture and for what reasons? Based on sociological and cultural theories, the new master's programme examines aspects of organisations and organisation. In this context, the organisation of art, culture and their institutions as well as the culturalisation of organisations are considered and analysed. Culture and cultural theory as crucial mediators for understanding and shaping societies are analysed and re-evaluated within these parameters.

In the four core modules of the master's programme, different perspectives on issues such as the role of digital media in organisation and organisations and on the analysis of fields of cultural production are adopted. The analysis always includes critical reflection. Organising is examined as a fluid and evolving concept. The modules also include practical elements, such as museum excursions, which enable students to directly observe cultural organisation. The thematic breadth of the master's programme is covered by cooperation between the Institute of Sociology and Cultural Organization and the Institute for Management and Organisation. This convergence is particularly evident in the module Cultural Entrepreneurship, which examines the role innovation and entrepreneurship play in culture and the arts, and the consequences of these ties.

The core modules are complemented by cultural studies integration modules, which cover the history and methodology of cultural studies in all corresponding master's programmes. Elective modules allow students to choose from a variety of specialisations, such as "Management & Change" or "Capitalist Dynamics and Social Change". Students have the opportunity to address questions of the master's programme in greater depth and consider them in other contexts, thus creating an individual study profile.
