Impact in Funding Proposals

The category “impact” is becoming increasingly important at national and European level: politicians and funding organisations want to ensure that public funds are used efficiently, and that research has a benefit for society. To remain competitive, researchers must be able to demonstrate the academic and societal impact of their work.

But impact is complex as it can be a result of many different factors and agents. Moreover, it often becomes evident only after a time span of years or even decades. Therefore, we will first discuss different types of impact and ask how they can be planned, monitored, and communicated. We will then look at requirements of funding programmes and explore how impact is related to research communication and transfer activities. Participants are invited to bring examples from their research, which we will use to plan a pathway to impact and define impact indicators.
