When Expectations Clash: Navigating Conflict during the PhD

The PhD journey comes with a wide range of academic and personal challenges. Doctoral researchers often work within complex supervisory and organizational structures in which high performance expectations, unclear agreements, as well as differing needs, expectations, and interests can lead to tension and conflict.

In this workshop, we will explore

  • how conflicts emerge and develop,
  • how to better recognize your own needs, interests, and boundaries,
  • how to navigate differing needs, interests, and expectations,
  • which communication strategies can foster clarity and mutual understanding,
  • and how to distinguish between the factual and emotional dimensions of difficult conversations.

The workshop combines conceptual input with interactive exercises and practical suggestions for your everyday life. In a confidential setting, you will have the opportunity to reflect on and share your own experiences and try out different approaches to dealing with conflict.

All doctoral candidates are warmly invited. Everything discussed in during the workshop remains strictly confidential.

Depending on the group, the workshop will be held in English or German.

This is a joint initiative by the Leuphana Graduate School and the Counselling Service of the Studierendenwerk OstNiedersachsen.
