GenAI-Natives research project: Rethinking education in the age of artificial intelligence

2025-07-09 Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing our lives - and it is changing how we learn. But how can young people learn not only to use AI, but also to understand, critically scrutinise and help shape it? The international research project GenAI-Natives, in which Prof Dr Dana-Kristin Mah and new member of staff Dr Fenja Kuchenbuch from Leuphana are also involved, is looking into this question.

The project is funded in the Cooperation Partnerships funding line of the Erasmus+ programme from February 2025 to June 2027. The University of Liechtenstein is taking the project lead and other project partners are the Education Authority of the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Vorarlberg University of Teacher Education in Austria. The project aims to improve the understanding and effective integration of generative AI, particularly in schools, by evaluating the use of AI in practice. The evaluation will be realised as part of a pilot study with teachers, which includes interviews, surveys and computer-aided analyses. A pilot study with students is also planned.

Leuphana University plays a central role in the project and, together with the University of Liechtenstein, is responsible for conducting the pilot study, analysing the results and publishing them. Another important aspect of the project is that the results are made available to a wide audience for teaching practice; workshops for training teachers and teacher training students, teaching and learning materials, practical guidelines and AI tools for teachers are being developed for this purpose. This is how the long-term project goal is to be achieved: Promote the development of AI skills and the meaningful integration of AI in education as well as the provision of evidence-based support for teachers, pupils and educational institutions.
