First steps towards a systematic review

2025-06-03 The way to the top of the evidence pyramid

In this two-part workshop for students, you will learn how to conduct sophisticated research for the “systematic review” exam format.

Systematic review is a research method that, when done right, is at the top of the “evidence pyramid.” It's got a long history and is really important in medicine and related fields, but systematic reviews are also becoming more popular and important in other subjects.

So, students often have to write a systematic review or other scientific overview paper for their final project. Comprehensive literature research is essential for success. As a library service, this training course focuses on this research, which must meet higher requirements in terms of completeness, transparency, and reproducibility than other research tasks.

Topics covered in the workshop:

  • What is a systematic review?
  • What does the literature research for a systematic review involve?
  • Which databases are suitable for my research question?
  • Which research strategies are suitable for traditional literature and which for gray literature?
  • How do you find good search terms?
  • How can you use literature management programs to check for duplicates?
  • How do you document your research?
