Publication Fund

Funding for open access publications

The Open Access Publication Fund of the MIZ:Library supports university members in financing open access articles and open access books. In the following, you will find information on the funding requirements and the application procedure, which can also be found in the implementation paper.

→ In addition to the publication fund, funding for open access publishing is possible through publishing agreements, on the basis of which open access publishing can be either discounted or free of charge.

If third-party funds are available to finance the publication fees, these should be used as a priority.
Please submit your manuscripts – whenever possible – to publishers with your ORCID iD.
Regarding the choice of a Creative Commons license, we strongly recommend CC BY 4.0, as this is open access compliant.

Who is eligible?

Eligible for funding are full-time professors, research assistants and internal scholarship holders who are employed at Leuphana. In contrast, professors and academic staff who are only working temporarily or on a guest basis, external scholarship holders and matriculated doctoral students without employment relationship with Leuphana are excluded from funding.

Which publications are funded?

Funding is provided for publications that are worldwide, directly, permanently, free of charge accessible and are published under a free licence (usually Creative Commons). Journal articles, monographs and edited volumes that meet the funding criteria are eligible for funding.

The funding criteria for articles and books can be found on the intranet.

What is excluded from funding?

  • Articles in hybrid journals (= subscription journals in which authors can choose to publish their articles behind a paywall or open access). Note: On the basis of publishing agreements, open access publishing in hybrid journals is often free of charge for Leuphana members. Check on the page "Publisher agreements" the linked title lists whether your preferred journal is covered by an agreement.
  • monographic dissertations
  • individual articles in edited volumes
  • publications that can be fully financed through third-party funds

Funding acknowledgement

All funded publications should contain a funding acknowledgment.  In the case of articles, the reference must be inserted in the "Acknowledgement" section. For books, the reference must be included in the imprint.

The funding reference shall be worded as follows:

German publication
Diese Publikation wurde gefördert durch den Open-Access-Publikationsfonds der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg.

English publication
This publication was funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of the Leuphana University Lüneburg.

Payment methods

Invoice amounts can either be paid directly to the publisher via MIZ: Library or reimbursed to the Institute.

Refunds are only possible for already published open access publications with a publication date of 2021 onwards. In addition, refunds require that the corresponding author is affiliated with Leuphana at the time of payment, as refunds to external parties are not possible.

Funding requests for articles and books are to be submitted to

Funding requests for open access articles can be submitted as soon as the manuscript has been accepted for publication. Please indicate in the email the journal, the publisher and the (expected) total costs.

Requests for open access books should be addressed to the Open Access Team at an early stage – i.e. preferably at the time of the search for a publisher – so that compliance with the funding criteria can be ensured in time.

The funding commitments are valid for a period of 12 months. If publication has not taken place after the deadline, a new application for funding must be submitted.

It is best to contact the Open Access Team before submitting your manuscript to a publisher to clarify questions regarding eligibility or invoicing:
