Funding Acknowledgements

Making funding visible

The financial support of research projects and the resulting publications by funding bodies are made visible via funding acknowledgements.

In this way, researchers can make the financing of various funding services publicly visible. The acknowledgement can indicate the funding of an entire research project or explicitly the funding of a publication. In the case of journal articles, the funding references are usually included in the "Acknowledgements" section. For books, the funding reference is usually embedded in the imprint. On the one hand, these acknowledgements enable public attribution to a funding body and create financial transparency. On the other hand, these funding references provide an important basis of information for various types of publication and funding analyses.

Such funding statements are sometimes required by research funders. Wording standards must be taken into account.

German Research Foundation (DFG)

Publications from DFG-funded projects must contain the following funding reference:

In German: "Gefördert durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Projektnummer(n)"

In foreign language publications, a translation of the DFG into the target language should be added, e.g. in English: "funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) - project number(s)"

The project number of the referenced project can be found in the grant letter or in the GEPRIS project information system: gepris.dfg.de. If a publication refers to several projects, the numbers must be separated by semicolons.
