Doctoral & Postdoctoral Theses

If your doctoral thesis or postdoctoral thesis ("Habilitation") was completed at Leuphana, you can publish it through the university library – either electronically or in print. In the case of publication via a publishing house, additional printed copies must be submitted to the library. The corresponding workflows are described below. If all requirements are met, you will receive a copy of the signed confirmation of receipt from us.

Please note

► According to the new doctoral regulations, the research data on which the dissertation or habilitation is based have to be archived. You can archive (and, if desired, publish) this data via the repository PubData. If all requirements are met, you will receive a copy of the signed confirmation of receipt from us, which you can use to prove to your department that you have submitted the required copies.

General information on the publication of dissertations/habilitations, the submission of deposit copies and the archiving of the underlying research data (according to the doctoral regulationsfrom 01.10.2023) can be found here.

Publish online

You can publish your doctoral or postdoctoral thesis electronically via the repository PubData and thus fulfil the publication obligation. All PubData publications are made accessible worldwide free of charge (i.e. in open access). The publications are not only visible in the PubData catalogue, but can also be searched via other catalogues and search engines (e.g. Google Scholar). In addition, the materials are archived for the long term and receive a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) so that they can be found and cited permanently.

Workflow

You can start the submission via this link. First log in with your Leuphana account, then select the respective resource type (Dissertation or Habilitation) and follow the next steps. You can pause the submission process at any time and continue at a later date. After the final submission of the dissertation or habilitation, you will receive a confirmation by e-mail.

After submission, the required forms must be sent to publizieren@leuphana.de. Your submitted information and documents will then be reviewed by the library. The dissertation will then be published via PubData.

Number of printed copies

Whether you need to provide printed copies to the library in addition to the electronic version depends on the respective doctoral regulations.

  • According to the new doctoral regulations (from 1 October 2023), no printed copies are to be submitted to the library in addition to the electronic version.
  • According to the old doctoral regulations, 3 printed and hardbound copies must also be submitted to the library. You can submit them either in person or by post. For personal submission, please make an appointment with us in advance –spontaneous submissions are not possible.

Removing Personal Data

If your doctoral or postdoctoral thesis includes a curriculum vitae (CV), please ensure that it is removed from both the online and/or printed version. If the CV is listed in the table of contents, a placeholder page with an explanatory note should be inserted. For example: “Pages 120–122 (Curriculum Vitae) contain personal data and have therefore not been included in the online publication.”

Required forms

  • You need to complete the information in the receipt confirmation for dissertations or the receipt confirmation for habilitations.
  • In the case of a cumulative dissertation, an additional confirmation from the examination committee is required (a template is provided in Annex 8 of the doctoral regulations).
  • In the case of a monographic dissertation, a printing authorization (Imprimatur) is required.

These forms are to be sent to: publizieren@leuphana.de

Publish printed

You can also submit your doctoral or postdoctoral thesis to the library in printed form only.

Number of printed copies

The number of copies you have to submit is defined in the doctoral regulations. According to the new doctoral regulations (01.10.2023) the following applies: In the case of a monographic publication by a publisher, please deliver 5 deposit copies to the library and provide proof of a minimum print run of 150 copies with a copy of the publisher's contract or, in the case of "Publication on Demand" publications, a delivery guarantee from the publisher for four years via an ISBN number. For all commercially published dissertations, please ensure that the so-called "Hochschulschriftenvermerk" is printed on the back of the title page (e.g.: Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, Dissertation, 20XX). This refers to the year of the defence, not the year of publication.

If there is no publisher's publication, 10 copies in book or photo print for the purpose of dissemination (DIN A4 or DIN A5, permanently bound) must be submitted to the library.

In the case of a cumulative dissertation, 10 complete copies of the framework paper including the articles and manuscripts, printed out and permanently bound, must be submitted to the library.

You can submit your dissertation or habilitation either in person or by post. For personal submission, please make an appointment with us in advance – spontaneous submissions are not possible.
