A Space for Debate: Online Workshop with Dr Romy Jaster

01. Feb

The online workshop will be held on Tuesday, 1 February 2022, from 12.30 to 15.30 and is offered as part of the project "Debate Cultures: rhetoric - performance - mediality".

Designing a debate space

How can we currently design a debate space that allows for a factual discussion and at the same time for the participation of as many as possible in the sense of equality?

We would like to discuss this question with Dr. Romy Jaster. The focus will be on conditions enabling and impeding discourse in such a debate space. In the workshop we will address the following topics, among others:

  •  Tensions between scientific, political and opinion-led debate
  •  Demands and goals of a debate space
  •  Limits of debating in such a space: Which limits should be set, which limits should we try to overcome?
  •  Problems and challenges of such a space and how to deal with them appropriately.

With a stronger focus on the concrete design of a debate space at Leuphana, we will also address the following questions:

  •  Which subject areas and questions are suitable for debates in the debate space?
  •  How can debates be formally designed or which debate formats are available? What rules could/should there be for debating?
  •  What requirements should/could be placed on the debaters?

Dr. Romy Jaster is an assistant professor of theoretical philosophy at Humboldt University Berlin, managing director of the German Society for Analytic Philosophy (GAP) and currently a Virtual Fellow at the Center for Mind & Cognition at Ruhr University Bochum. She is also active as an argumentation trainer. Together with David Lanius, she has been running the Forum for a Culture of Debate (Forum für Streitkultur) since 2017, which focuses on the question of how public discourse can be improved against the backdrop of societal challenges.
