Lina's experiences

[Translate to Englisch:] Lina ©Leuphana College
Lina started out studying business psychology at Leuphana, but quickly realised that political science was a much better fit for her and switched. She particularly enjoys the work in student initiatives and in her subject group here. What she particularly appreciates about Lüneburg is the relaxed atmosphere and the student quality of life.

My studies

I study political science as a major and business psychology as a minor. I first started with business psychology as my major and politics as my minor.

During the first two semesters, however, I realised that my focus was the other way around. Then, in the second semester, I decided to switch my focus and now do politics in the major and business psychology in the minor.

What are your academic interests?

Personally, I am interested in intercultural things. Especially in the political field, I try to focus on that. I look at how other political systems work, what effects that has, also in comparison to Germany, and what role culture can play in this. In business psychology, I'm interested in the basics of human action, decision-making processes, but also how we perceive our environment and the people around us. That is something that is very general, that is not limited to Germany or to any particular culture - at least in most cases. And I can then transfer this knowledge to many other subject areas, whether politics, economics or sustainability.

Why did you choose to study political science at Leuphana College?

I was actually already here when I decided to study political science. In theory, I could have gone to another university, but I liked it here so much. I'm still very convinced of the college model, that interdisciplinarity is part of our programme right from the start and that the degree programme allows me to try out many things and pursue my interests. I can't do that at any other university.  Through the complementary studies, I can decide anew every semester what I'm interested in. If, after a few semesters, new fields open up that interest me, I always have the option of saying that I would now like to work more on this topic. As far as I know, this doesn't exist at any other university in Germany, and that's why I'm here.

What advantages has the study at Leuphana College?

Definitely the interdisciplinarity, i.e. that you are encouraged to look into other subject areas and that you actually can't help but educate yourself beyond your own subject. Nevertheless, I wouldn't say that I'm not doing a sound study programme. I find that the weighting between major and minor gives me a well-rounded picture without losing sight of the world. This self-determination in my studies is a big plus for me.

Whom would you recommend to study at Leuphana?

I would say, especially for people who are not only interested in one thing, but say that they find this interdisciplinarity exciting. If you say I'm interested in a subject, but I also see that it borders on other subjects and I want to understand it fully and that's why I want to deal with the bordering fields as well. If you are someone who says I want to have a rounded picture of the world, then that is really the right thing to do.
