Zotero: Don't get lost in the details - collect, sort and cite texts efficiently

Collecting and organizing references, creating literature lists or inserting references and bibliographies into a paper are all part of academic writing. Reference management programs are helpful tools that can make these tasks much easier. Zotero is a reference management program that grew out of the open-source movement. The desktop version runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers.

In this beginner-level workshop, an experienced colleague will demonstrate how to save search results from catalogs and databases directly into Zotero, how to attach and annotate PDFs, and how to transfer the collected references into your paper. In addition, you’ll learn many useful tips and tricks for working with reference management software.

For the demonstration, the following systems/programs will be used:
- Windows 10 or higher
- Zotero 10 for Windows
- Firefox or Chrome
- MS Word for Windows or LibreOffice

Everyone who is interested is welcome to attend. Please register for the workshop. It will only take place if there are a minimum number of registrations.

  • If you would like to actively follow the demonstration, please install the program before the event. Installation instructions can be found below under “Documents” or on the Zotero website: https://www.zotero.org/support/installation. Unfortunately, there will be no time to troubleshoot installation problems during the training itself.
  • You should make sure to install the most recent version of Zotero if possible. If the version was released within the last 14 days before the workshop, I will specify which version to use in the reminder email.
  • For participants who do not have their own laptop, one can be provided upon request no later than one day before the event.
  • No prior knowledge is necessary; the event is specifically aimed at beginners.
