Language proficiency and entrance examinations
For teacher training courses
For all teacher training courses you need sufficient knowledge of German. If you would like to apply for the teaching subject English, you must also prove your knowledge of English. For the subjects music and physical education you have to pass an entrance examination. In the case of teacher training courses, you apply either for two subjects (for primary school, lower secondary and intermediate school teaching) or for one professional discipline and one teaching subject (for vocational school teaching).
German proficiency
for unrestricted admission
- Successful completion of the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test) at a German Studienkolleg (preparatory course)
- successfully completed German-language higher education studies (complete studies in German)
- Language Diploma of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs Level II (DSD II)
- Goethe Zertifikat C2 (equivalent to Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom)
- German Language Examination for University Admission (DSH at least level 2)
- Test DaF with a total of at least 16 points, of which at least 4 points in all sub-tests (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, oral expression)
- Certificate of the examination "telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule" or "telc Deutsch C2
- International Baccalaureate IB-Diploma with German as Language A at Higher Level with a proven final grade of at least 6
- European Baccalaureate with German as language L1 or L2 with a final grade of 8.0
- Other certificates recognised by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) and the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) as proof of sufficient knowledge of German for admission to higher education studies
for conditional admission
- Goethe Certificate C1
- German Language Examination for University Admission (DSH Level 1)
Holders of the Goethe Zertifikat C1 and those who have passed the DSH-1 examination may be granted conditional admission. The admission is valid until the end of the second semester and is subject to the condition that the student attends a compulsory DSH preparation course and successfully completes the examination with at least DSH-2. This regulation only applies if the English language skills are already available at the time of application. If proof of German language skills at DSH-2 level is not provided by the end of the second semester, the student will be exmatriculated.
Important
German language skills must be proven at the time of application. Only the diploma, examination certificate or certificate serves as proof. Certificates of participation or proofs that only state the number of hours cannot be accepted.

Teacher training for English
Candidates wishing to train as English teachers must demonstrate proficiency in English. Please therefore include one of the following documents with your application:
English test
The following tests will be accepted as proof of sufficient proficiency in English:
- TOEFL-Test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) internet-based test with at least 90 points (Reading: 21 points, Listening: 19 points, Speaking: 22 points, Writing: 20 points)
Test delivery at the test centre or as Home Edition, as well as 4-skills TOEFL iBT Paper Edition from test date 12 April 2021) - Cambridge B2 First with at least Scale 175
- Cambridge C1 Advanced with at least Scale 180
- Cambridge C2 Proficiency with at least Scale 200
- IELTS Academic Version (International English Language Testing System) with at least 6,5 points
- Pearson Test of English, Academic Test (PTE Academic) with at least 63 points
- TOEIC- *4 skills* Test with least 850 points for listening and reading and at least 340 points for speaking and writing
Note
As proof of the English test you have to submit a copy of the test certificate with the test result. Certificates of participation or documents that only list the number of hours will not be accepted. At the time of your application, the test results must not be older than 2 years.
University course
Successful completion of an English-language degree programme.
Native language
The following certificate is accepted for English as a native language:
- Certificate from an English-speaking school that entitles the holder to study in the respective country
Your university entrance qualification and not your nationality will be taken as proof.
Important Note
You must in general provide proof of English proficiency with your application. Proof can be submitted later but no later than the start of the teaching period. Only the diploma, examination certificate or certificate serves as proof. Certificates of attendance or proofs that only state the number of hours can not be accepted. Submitted test results must not be older than two years.
If you are unable to provide the proof at the time of application, you will be admitted for a limited period of time, if you are admitted, and must provide the proof by the start of lectures at the latest. If the proof is not provided by this time, you will be de-registered.
Subject art, music and sport
Applicants for the music teacher training programme and the art teacher training programme must take an aptitude test at Leuphana College. Applicants for the teacher training programme in sport must take an aptitude test.
Music, art and sport are taught in German, so the degree programmes are aimed at students with a good knowledge of German. Detailed information on the specific entrance requirements (aptitude test Music and aptitude test Sport) can be found on our German website.
