Specific entry requirements

For majors taught in German

If you are intending to take a German-language major at Leuphana College, you will need to provide proof of proficiency in English in addition to a valid university entrance qualification. Applicants who have acquired their IB Diploma outside Germany will also need to provide proof of proficiency in German.

English proficiency

All applicants must provide proof of English proficiency also if they apply for a German degree programme.  Please therefore include one of the following documents with your application:

Proof

  • English test
  • English grade

The proof of the English grade can be found on the copy of the university entrance qualification (diploma). This also applies to applicants who have completed their Abitur assessment at a German school abroad.

Native language

The following certificate is accepted for English as a native language:

  • Certificate from an English-speaking school that entitles the holder to study in the respective country

Your university entrance qualification and not your nationality will be taken as proof.

Important

Proof of English proficiency must be submitted by 15 July. The date of submission is the date of receipt by Leuphana and not the date postmarked. Only the relevant final certificate will be accepted as proof. Certificates of participation or documents that only list the number of hours will not be accepted.
If you cannot submit the necessary documents with your application, you will be accepted conditionally and must present the required proof by the end of your second semester at the latest. Students who fail to provide proof of proficiency by this deadline shall be de-registered.

German proficiency

Applicants for a German-language major do not need to provide proof of German proficiency if they have obtained the Allgemeine Hochschulreife at a German school abroad or have passed a university preparatory course (Studienkolleg) or have obtained an IB Diploma in Germany.

Applicants who have acquired their IB Diploma outside Germany will also need to provide proof of SUFFICIENT German skills in addition to English proficiency for a German-language major.

Proof for unrestricted admission

  • a German-language university degree (complete degree taught and assessed in German)
  • a Sprachdiplom from the Kultusministerkonferenz (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder), Stufe II (DSD II)
  • Goethe-Zertifikat C2 (equivalent to Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom)
  • Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (at least DSH 2)

With Goethe Zertifikat C1 and passed DSH-1 exam a conditional admission can be granted. This regulation only applies if the English language skills are already available at the time of application.

If proof of German language proficiency at DSH-2 level is not available by the end of your second semester, the student will be de-registered.
