Public transport costs

Students of Leuphana have free access to the regional transportation network with the semester ticket. The semester ticket, which is financed by part of the semester fee, enables students to travel from Lüneburg to Hamburg's Central Station. For the onward journey to the Hamburg Media School, a HHV one-way ticket (short distance) must be purchased, if one chooses public transportation. Further information about the semester ticket can be found here.

Studying in Hong Kong

One of the great opportunities that comes with studying Digital Media at Leuphana University of Lüneburg is the chance to get two single degrees, one from Leuphana and one from the City University of Hong Kong.

At the City University of Hong Kong, you can study at the School of Creative Media for two years in order to earn two degrees. The first three semesters of Digital Media will be studied at Leuphana College, followed by four semesters at CityU and one final semester at Leuphana College.

You will therefore fulfill 50% of the graduation requirement of both programmes, and will thus receive two degrees. One from Leuphana as a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media and a second one from CityU as either a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Creative Media (= BACM) OR a Bachelor of Arts and Science (Hons) in New Media (= BAS).

Having both a national and international Bachelor will help you to apply to diverse Masters programmes as well as in your future job perspectives, especially on an international level.

For more information on what you can expect from studying in Hong Kong visit CityU`s Global Services Office.

Courses and credits

Generally you are free to choose from a broad range of classes that will allow you to deepen you practical knowledge, since the School of Creative Media allows you to approach digital media in a practical way. Assignment wise, at CityU, you have to hand in practical end of year projects, rather than essays like at Leuphana College.

Both universities agreed upon a study path for the Joint Degree that shows which classes to take at CityU. Your compulsory classes will be credited as MDM modules.

For the Minor and Complementary Studies section, there are lists that show you which courses can be transferred to Leuphana.

Study Plan

You will be studying for 8 semesters ( four at Leuphana College and four at CityU), achieving 240 ECTS in total, from which 180 ECTS will be counted towards the Leuphana degree.

60 ECTS achieved at SCM will be recognized by Leuphana (as substitute courses for the Major Digital Media as well as the Minor and Complementary Studies).

Minor

Unfortunately the subsidiary subjects in Popular Music Studies and Political Sciencescan’t be studied in Hong Kong. Therefore, you will not be able to choose those subjects as your Leuphana minor if you wish to go to Hong Kong.

Language

The language of instruction of the Double Degree Programme is English, just like at the Leuphana College.

CityU offers Cantonese language classes.

Timing

There are two semesters at CityU. Semester A starts in the beginning of September and ends in the beginning of December. Semester B then continues mid January and finishes by the end of April.

CityU's semester B starts in January. You will thus leave for Hong Kong by the beginning of January.

  • Please keep in mind that you will still have to hand in your Leuphana assignments of your third semester. Leuphana will try to enable early assessment in your last winter semester at Leuphana, however it is your responsibility to hand in the assignments on time.
  • Your last semester at CityU ends in December. You will then continue with your studies at Leuphana College in the summer semester, starting in April, in which you will be writing your Bachelor dissertation.

Fees

You will only be obliged to continue paying the Semesterbeitrag at Leuphana College. Students from CityU will however continue to pay the tuition fees at CityU during their stay at Leuphana.

Scholarships

You can apply for a DAAD Jahresstipendium für Studierende aller Fächer as well as for Auslands BAföG (also only for one year) which is subject to different income regulations than Inlands BAföG (therefore easier to get) and is granted in favor of Hong Kong living expenses and travel costs.

For further information, please contact the International Office under outgoing@uni.leuphana.de

Food

According to those students who came back from Hong Kong it is rather tricky to have a vegetarian diet in Hong Kong. There are also shared kitchens in the student dorms, however apparently it is often cheaper to go out for a meal than to actually cook European food at home.

A meal at student canteens at CityU costs between HK$20 and HK$50 (2 to 5 Euros). For more information on food and restaurants in and around CityU please have a look at the video.

Accommodation

International students are allowed to stay in the student dorms for the entire two years. A double study-bed room costs approximately 520 Euros (HK$4,840) per semester.

Those dorm rooms are shared, as well as the bathrooms, which are same sex. For more information please visit the Student Residence Office at CityU.

Arrival and Public Transport

The City University of Hong Kong is located in West Kowloon. There are various ways how to get to CityU from the airport.

To pay for public transport you can use the Octopus Card, a stored-value electronic fare card. It also allows you to pay at many local restaurants, supermarkets, vending machines etc.

Graduation

You will receive two different Bachelor degrees, one from Leuphana and one from City University, each following the respective regulations concerning achieved grades, course structure and the consequential final average.

According to CityU regulations, students who participate in the joint degree programme should fulfil the graduation requirements of both degrees at CityU and LeuphanaU in order to receive the award certification. At CityU you have to apply to graduation online. You have to do so as soon as you know that you will finish your studies and receive your complete transcript from Leuphana (180 CP) within the timeframe set by CityU.

Each year has three set dates/timeframes for graduation at CityU.
