Specific entry requirements
For major Engineering
If you are intending to take the major Engineering at Leuphana College, you will need to provide proof of proficiency in English in addition to a valid university entrance qualification. Applicants who have acquired their IB Diploma outside Germany will also need to provide proof of proficiency in German.
Proof of English proficiency
All applicants must provide proof of English proficiency also if they apply for a German degree programme. Please therefore include one of the following documents with your application:
English test
The following tests will be accepted as proof of sufficient proficiency in English:
- TOEFL-Test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) at least 60 points (Reading: 10 Points, Listening: 13 Points, Speaking: 18 Points, Writing: 18 Points, Writing: 15 Points)
Test delivery at the test centre or as Home Edition, as well as 4-skills TOEFL iBT Paper Edition from test date 12 April 2021 - Cambrigde B2 First at least Scale 160
- Cambridge C1 Advanced at least Scale 180
- Cambridge C2 Proficiency at least Scale 200
- IELTS Academic Version (International Language Testing System) at least 4,5 points
- TOEIC Listening & Reading at least 650 points
- TOEIC Speaking & Writing at least 280 points
- Pearson Test of English, Academic Test (PTE Academic) at least 50 ponits
Note
As proof of the English test you have to submit a copy of the test certificate with the test result. At the time of your application, the test results must not be older than 2 years.
English grade
If you have obtained the Allgemeine Hochschulreife at a German school abroad, you will need the following grades as proof of proficiency in English:
- English as Leistungsfach or Schwerpunktfach in the gymnasiale Oberstufe
or - a minimum score of 8 as recorded in the candidate's university entrance qualification certificates in English as a Grundkurs/Grundfach in the gymnasiale Oberstufe (average of the four half-year periods and if applicable Abitur assessments)
or - a final grade of at least 3,0 for English as recorded on your valid university entrance qualification certificates
Note
The proof of the English grade can be found on the copy of the university entrance qualification (diploma). This also applies to applicants who have completed their Abitur assessment at a German school abroad.
University course
You can prove the required knowledge of English with already completed modules of a university course, as long as these meet the following requirements:
- Modules of a university course of at least 30 Credit Points (CP) according to ECTS, taught exclusively in English and completed with an assessment in English
Native language
The following certificate is accepted for English as a native language:
- Certificate from an English-speaking school that entitles the holder to study in the respective country
Note
Your university entrance qualification and not your nationality will be taken as proof.
Important notes on the proof of English language skills
Proof of English proficiency must be submitted by 15 July. The date of submission is the date of receipt by Leuphana and not the date postmarked. Only the relevant final certificate will be accepted as proof. Certificates of participation or documents that only list the number of hours will not be accepted.
If you cannot submit the necessary documents with your application, you will be accepted conditionally and must present the required proof by the end of your second semester at the latest. Students who fail to provide proof of proficiency by this deadline shall be de-registered.
Proof of German proficiency
If you have obtained your higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB) at a German school in Germany or abroad, you do NOT have to prove your knowledge of German.
- German Language Examination for University Admission (DSH at least level 1)*.
- Goethe Certificate at least C1*
- Test DaF with a total of at least 12 points, of which at least 3 points in all sub-tests (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, oral expression)*
- successfully passed assessment test at a German Studienkolleg (preparatory course)
- successfully completed German-language university studies (complete studies in German)
- Language Diploma of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs Level II (DSD II)
- Certificate of the examination "telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule" or "telc Deutsch C2"
- International Baccalaureate IB-Diploma with German as Language A at Higher Level with a proven final grade of at least 6
- European Baccalaureate with German as language L1 or L2 with a final grade of 8.0
- Other certificates recognised by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) and the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) as proof of sufficient knowledge of German for admission to a higher education programme.
*In the case of proof of successfully passing the DSH1 examination, Goethe Zertifikat C1 or Test DaF 3, admission may be granted on the condition that the applicants successfully complete a German language course over two semesters worth 10 credit points.
Important
German language skills must be proven at the time of application. Only the diploma, examination certificate or certificate serves as proof. Certificates of participation or proofs that only state the number of hours cannot be accepted.
