Studying Law and the Future Society
In the Law and the Future Society minor, you will learn how law, society and global challenges are connected - and how legal decisions actively shape our future. You will deal with the big questions of our time:
- How can democracy be protected in a rapidly changing world?
- What legal rules are needed to deal with artificial intelligence?
- How are social transformations changing the way we live together?
You will learn about the legal framework within which these developments take place - always interdisciplinary, practical and from different perspectives. In this way, you will not only understand the law, but also its influence on society, politics, business and technology.
What is it all about?
- Protecting democracy: You will learn how democratic systems defend themselves against extremism and threats - and where the boundaries between freedom and security lie.
- Thinking legally about sustainability: How can law contribute to a sustainable society? You will analyse the role that laws play in protecting the environment, climate and resources.
- Artificial intelligence & law: From the police to the courts to business: you will learn how AI is already being used today - and what legal rules, limits and liability issues apply to it.
- Peace, Security & International Crime: You will analyse global conflicts and learn how legal systems respond to terrorism, organised crime and international security issues.
- Identity & Equality: How does law create spaces for diversity - and where does it set boundaries? Topics such as integration, anti-discrimination, family and gender are focussed on.
- Law & Economics:You will understand how laws influence economic activity - and how legal rules control human behaviour.
- Borders & Migration: You will deal with migration, asylum and citizenship and examine the tension between human rights, security and freedom of movement.
Why is the minor an excellent choice?
- You deal with highly topical future issues
- You think in an interdisciplinary and international way
- You will develop sought-after skills that are needed in politics, business, administration and international organisations
The Law and the Future Society minor is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to understand how law shapes our world today - and how it can be responsibly shaped in the future.
