The world's first sustainability MBA celebrates anniversary

2023-09-01 Lüneburg. On September 8 and 9, around 200 graduates and students of the MBA Sustainability Management will gather on the campus of Leuphana University Lüneburg for the traditional Home Coming Days. Under the motto "Beautiful Green World - Of Mastering, Failing and Moving On", this year they celebrate the 20th anniversary of the world's first Green MBA.

In 2003, sustainability expert Professor Dr. Stefan Schaltegger launched the then novel MBA program for sustainability management at Leuphana's Centre Sustainability Management (CSM), starting a success story: In the meantime, more than 500 graduates have successfully completed the program and are actively contributing to sustainability change in companies, the public sector and non-profit organizations.

At a conference on the first day of the event, participants will discuss what has been achieved in companies over the past 20 years in terms of sustainability, what has failed miserably, and how to move optimistically into the future despite all the challenges and setbacks. Experts from companies and civil society will give impulses in lectures, among them also graduates of the MBA program who work at the EWE Group or the photovoltaic start-up Installion Gmbh.

On September 9, course director Stefan Schaltegger will present 35 new graduates of the course with their MBA certificates in a ceremony. Afterwards, the Master's hats will be tossed into the air in front of the backdrop of the central building in the established tradition. The mayor of Lüneburg, Claudia Kalisch, is the guest speaker at the event. She herself had once helped establish the program as a research assistant and later earned an MBA in sustainability management at Leuphana.
