General Information

Who is the target audience of the Masters programme?

The Masters programme Arts and Cultural Management is targeted at employees of cultural organizations in different countries who wish to improve in their profession regarding strategy building, entrepreneurship and audience development, taking into account opportunities and risks of fundamental societal changes, for example, societal political challenges, demographic migration, processes of digitalization and globalization. It is also designed for people who would like to work in that field.

Do I have to know German to study in the Masters programme Arts and Cultural Management?

You don’t have to know German to study in the Masters programme Arts and Cultural Management. The programme is completely in English.

What is an official Masters Degree?

The Masters programme Arts and Cultural Management is subjected to a full evaluation process that guarantees its quality. As an official Masters Degree from Leuphana University Luneburg it grants international recognition, e.g. for PhD programmes.

Is the Masters programme entirely online?

No, the M.A. Arts and Cultural Management programme involves two weeks of presence at the Leuphana Universität Lüneburg at the end of September. However most of the time, classes will take place online.

How is the Goethe-Institut involved?

The Masters programme Arts and Cultural Management was developed by the Professional School of Leuphana Universität Lüneburg in close cooperation with the Goethe-Institut including general ideas about the framework, focuses, and crosscutting themes. Five specialists modules dealing with the societal role of cultural management and cultural organizations in transition were also designed by the Goethe-Institut.

Organizational

Where do the classroom sessions take place?

Classes are schedules on 5 days in a classroom session. The "offline session" will take place in Lüneburg.
Those classes mark the beginning of the first and the third semester.

When do the classroom sessions take place?

The classroom sessions are both schedules in mid-September, so you start the first and the third semester with a 5 day classroom session in Lüneburg.

What will the two classroom sessions be about?

The first week of the classroom session involves an introduction to the basic modules and to the programme. In the second classroom session there will be workshops as preparation for your master thesis.

Is it mandatory to attend the classroom sessions?

The classroom sessions are part of the course structure, where you will re­capture your learning progress and outcome during the online classes and will have additional discussion on the classes with your fellow students as well as the lecturer.

Are there any vacation times during the programme?

Unfortunately, there are no classical semester breaks, however, since this is a professional study programme, we can individually postpone assignment for your vacation time.

Do I get a residential permit as a student of the programme?

No, since the classroom sessions are once a year, you do not need a residential permit to get accepted in the programme.

Is there an age limit for the programme?

No there is no age limit.

How long does the programme last?

The standard period of study for the Masters programme is 3 semesters (60 CP variant) or 4 semesters (90 CP variant). All certificates from the Masters programme Arts and Cultural Management run for 2 to 3 semesters.

Is there accommodation provided during the classroom sessions?

There is no accommodation provided for the classroom session as students preferred searching for accommodation themselves in recent years.

How does the programme deal with time differences and differing working days?

Most of your studies can be done during the weekends. However, there are webinars taking place during the week. To adjust to the time differences, we will find suitable times and days using polls.

Application

Who is eligible for the programme?

The Masters programme Arts and Cultural Management is aimed at candidates

  • with an undergraduate degree (Bachelor or at least equivalent)
  • with generally one year’s relevant work experience after you completed your first university degree and
  • with English skills on a sophisticated level.

What does it mean to have ‘English language skills on a sophisticated level’?

The Masters is aimed at candidates with

  • an undergraduate degree (Bachelor or at least equivalent) that qualifies them for work in the field from an accredited university in Germany or abroad
  • generally one year’s relevant work experience after you completed your first university degree
  • advanced English skills

The following tests are accepted as proof of English proficiency:

  • TOEFL, IBT min. 92 points
  • IELTS (Academic version) min. 6.5 points
  • CAE or CPE: Level C1, Grade B
  • TOEIC 4 skills test: min. 720 points in listening and reading and 310 points in speaking and writing

Do I have to have a Bachelor degree in management or art in order to study for the Masters programme?

No, all undergraduate degrees on at least Bachelor level will be accepted independently from the programme you studied.

I did only obtain 180 ECTS in my Bachelor studies (or 3 years standard periods of study), can I study the programme?

Yes, you can study the programme. You might have to acquire additional credit points. We would find individual solutions for you. The recognition of professional experience is possible to fill the CP gap.

What are ECTS credits?

The ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) is a system which allows the acknowledgement of credit point from a degree programme all across European Union countries.

What kind of work experience provide additional credits?

Working as a professional for one year or more can be credited with up to 30 CP. Please find more information about earning additional credits on our website.

Is it possible to apply for the Masters programme without an undergraduate degree?

No. All Masters programmes in the federal state of Lower Saxony are bound to the legal guideline to require an undergraduate degree of at least Bachelor level.

Do I need to have professional experience for the programme?

Yes, for the programme you need to have at least one year of relevant professional experience (voluntary and part-time work are also accepted) after you completed your first university degree either in the field of management, arts management, arts administration or similar fields.

What is the application deadline for the Masters programme?

The new intake for the Arts and Cultural Management M. A. is once a year in September. You have until May 31st to complete the online applications.

Which documents do I have to submit for the online application?

For the application process we accept all your documents in electronic form:

  • CV (table format)
  • Certified copy of degree certificate
  • Copy of university entrance qualification certificate
  • Proof of English skills
  • Proof of at least one year’s relevant professional experience (voluntary and part-time work accepted)

How does the application process for the Masters programme look like?

To be accepted onto the Masters programme, you must meet the admission requirements and respect the application deadline. You will find all information on the requirements and necessary documents can be found here. If the number of applications exceeds the number of study places, the Bachelor grade will be used as an additional admission criterion.

After the application deadline, the admissions committee will decide whether to admit you to the Masters programme. Successful candidates will be sent the documents they need for enrolment.

Late admission is possible until September 15th.

When will I be notified about admission?

Leuphana University of Lüneburg Professional School will confirm in writing the receipt of your application, and will contact you as soon as possible if we require any other documents. We will examine your application and generally notify you (via email) in June whether or not you have been accepted. An official admission letter will be sent to you latest in July before the start of the course.

What do I have to do after I am admitted to the programme?

After you have been admitted to the programme, you can enrol into the programme online. You will have to accept the study place, pay the semester fee (of approximately 200 €), sign documents like the declaration on the use of Leuphana IT infrastructure, etc. Furthermore, you will be sent preparation materials which give you first insights on the programme.

Curriculum

How do the online sessions of the programme take place?

You will be introduced to a topic through an online lecture with correspondent literature and further study materials. In the course of the classes you are working on assignments to successfully complete the class. Additional to these, you will meet, learn and discuss with your lecture via online seminars which are spread over the semester.

What is the difference between the 60 CP and the 90CP variant?

The 90 CP variant includes more content since you study all of the 15 modules from the curriculum. In the 60 CP variant you study 7 mandatory modules plus 2 mandatory elective modules which you can choose.

What language is the programme in?

The Masters programme is entirely taught in English. Therefore, to be eligible, you need to have sophisticated English language skills.

Credit Points, Workload and Course of Study

How many credit points do I get per certificate?

Each certificate is consists of 15 ECTS points.

How long do I have to study to get a certificate?

All certificates of the Masters programme Arts and Cultural Management run for 2 to 3 semesters.

Is there a time limit to complete my Masters degree?

In general, you can exceed the regular length of study (3 or 4 semester) by 4 semesters. The 4 extra semesters do not include periods of sick leave, nursing or parental leave and official leave of absence. An official leave of absence can be granted for another 4 semesters.

What kind of examinations are there?

The examinations are mostly portfolio exams which are graded by your study activity and assignments. They will be explained in detail in each online course.

Finances

Is there an application fee?

No, there is no application fee but we have tuition fees.

How much does the Masters programme Arts and Cultural Management cost?

Costs depend on the option you choose. For the 3-semester course with 60 CP you pay 7,284 EUR in total. For the 4-semester course with 90 CP it is 9,284 EUR in total. Each certificate costs 2.460 EUR per certificate. Furthermore, you pay the current term contribution of about 210 EUR per semester.

Is it possible to pay the tuition fees by instalments?

Yes, the tuition fees can be paid in instalment. At the Professional School we also offer a financial advisory service which you can contact via our website here.

Can I turn to the Goethe Institute for financial support?

The Goethe-Institut prefers supporting people they have gotten to know previously. That gives them a higher certainty that their financial support is well invested. If your looking for financial support, we would recommend to look up the Goethe-Institut website and participate in their offers (courses, evening events, seminars).

How can I find scholarships?

At the moment we are still in the process of finding partners who would support the programme with scholarships for both travel expenses and tuition fees, since we cannot offer any scholarships ourselves.
