General Information

To whom is the professional Master’s programme in Sustainable Chemistry Management aimed?

The Sustainable Chemistry Management programme is suitable for anyone who has already attained a first university degree and is interested in sustainable chemistry and how sustainability can be realised from a management perspective in sectors connected to the chemical enterprise.

Is knowledge of German necessary to study in the Master’s Sustainable Chemistry Management?

No, the language of all classes is English. 

What is an official Master’s Degree?

The Master`s programme is subject to a full evaluation that guarantees its quality. The official Master`s degree from Leuphana University Lüneburg confers international recognition, for instance, for doctoral studies. You`ll get the “Master of Business Administration” degree after completing the course successfully.

Does the Master’s programme take place entirely online?

There is one introduction week at the very beginning of your studies in March which takes place at the Leuphana University. All other classes are online.

How is ISC3 involved?

The International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) is an independent international institution that played a huge role in the development of the study programme together with the Institute of Sustainable and Environmental Chemistry (ISEC) of Leuphana University.

Organizational

Where and when do the classroom sessions take place?

The only classroom session on-site takes place for a week at the very beginning of the programme in March.

What will be taught during the introduction week?

The introduction week at the beginning of the programme in March has first lectures taught by Professor Kümmerer, an introduction to the online learning platform, library services and additionally provides an opportunity for networking with fellow students and alumni.

Are there any holidays during the programme?

Yes, the programme features a two-week long autumn break at the end of September and a three-week long winter break around Christmas and New Year`s Eve. But no classical semester breaks.

Can I apply for a residence permit as a student of the programme?

No, as moving to Germany for this programme is not necessary. A student visa (if needed) should be sufficient for the attendance blocks.

Is there an age limit for the programme?

No there is not.

What is the duration of the programme?

The standard period of study is 3 semesters, which is equivalent to 1.5 years.

Does Leuphana University provide accommodation during the classroom session?

No, but the programme coordination provides a list of suggested accommodations upon demand. As Lüneburg is a tourist hotspot, booking an accommodation in advance is suggested.

Application

What requirements do I have to meet to be eligible for this programme? / What are the admission requirements?

You need to fulfil the following requirements:

  • A first university degree (e.g. bachelor’s degree)
  • Professional experience of 2 years if you have a bachelor’s degree or 1 year if you have a master’s degree
  • Previous chemical knowledge either through work experience or attained in your first university degree (equivalent to 5 ECTS points)
  • Previous management knowledge either through work experience or attained in your first university degree (equivalent to 5 ECTS points)
  • Very good knowledge of English (equivalent to TOEFL of at least 92 points)

What does it mean to have "very good knowledge of English"?

We want to make sure that you are able to understand the lectures, which is why English is a prerequisite. You can either verify your knowledge through language certifications like TOEFL (at least 92 points) or IELTS Academic version (at least 6.5 points). But you can also verify it with a documented stay in an English-speaking country of at least 6 months, a documented working experience in an English-speaking company of at least 12 months, a publication in English in an official scientific journal or by previously studying at a university with English as a teaching language (of at least 1 semester).

Do I have to have a Bachelor´s degree in in chemistry in order to study for the Master’s programme?

No, that is not necessary. But you should be able to provide basic chemical knowledge either through your work life or through a course you have taken throughout your studies (of at least 5 ECTS points).

I only achieved 180 ECTS in my Bachelor's studies. Is it possible for me to study the programme?

Yes, but to achieve the master`s degree you will need to get a total of 300 ECTS points. You can get 60 CP from the study programme, leaving a 60 CP gap you will have to fill. We will find an individual solution for you, but generally the recognition of professional experience is possible.

What are the ECTS points?

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) allows the acknowledgement of credit points from degree programmes all across European Countries. 1 ECTS is equivalent to 30 hours of work.

Which types of work experience provide additional credits?

Working as a professional for at least a year can earn you up to 30 credits. Find out more about acquiring more credits on our site.

Is it possible to apply for the Master’s programme without having completed a Bachelor´s degree?

No.

Is professional experience necessary to apply to the programme?

Yes. You need at least 2 years of professional experience after the attainment of a bachelor’s degree or 1 year after a master’s degree.

What is the current deadline to apply for the Master’s programme?

You can apply via our online application until the 10th of December each year. Check out our website for additional early bird deadlines.

When is the application period for the certificate programme?

You can apply for the certificate programme at the same time as for the master’s programme.

What documents are required for the online application?

The following documents are going to be needed for a complete application process:

  • Your Bachelor`s degree or Bachelor`s and Master`s degree (if you already have both)
  • Optional: transcript of records of your acquired degrees
  • Verification of prior knowledge of business administration (e.g.: letter from your employer, certificates of extracurricular activities, classes you took during previous study programmes, etc.)
  • Your curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Verification of work experience (e.g.: letter from your employer, etc.)
  • English knowledge verification (if you are not a native speaker; e.g.: official test like TOEFL, extended time abroad in an English-speaking country, a semester at a university with English as teaching language, etc.)

What is the application process for the Master’s programme?

You will submit your application and all needed documents via our online application on myCampus. Afterwards the programme coordination will screen your application and get back to you if something is incomplete. They will also contact you directly after the admission committee has decided upon your admission to the programme. The myCampus platform will also send you updates via e-mail when your application is being processed. Please check in on myCampus regularly.

When will I receive notification of admission?

The admission committee is typically meeting after the respective application deadlines. Then you will receive a preliminary notice of admission from the programme coordinator. Afterwards an automatic e-mail from myCampus will inform you about the official notice of admission which can then be downloaded from the platform. Review it carefully, as it includes essential deadlines regarding your enrolment in the study programme.

What steps should I take after being admitted to the programme?

Once you've been accepted into the programme, you can sign up for it online. Accepting the study spot and paying the semester fee (around €210) is required. Please, make sure to comply with the deadlines outlined in the admission notice.

Programme Structure, Credit Points, and Study Requirements

How are the online sessions of the programme conducted?

The study material is offered on the online learning platform Moodle, with live-sessions using Zoom. The way the online modules are structured varies with each module and lecturer respectively, but the study material can appear in online lectures via Zoom, recorded video-lectures, scientific papers, course books and combinations of those. Additionally, lecturers offer live sessions to answer your questions.

What is the duration of a module?

Each module lasts 6 weeks. Additionally, the modules are split into 3 phases, with each of them lasting 2 weeks. Modules typically start on Wednesdays and end on Tuesdays.

How does the programme accommodate time differences and different working days?

The study material is offered online and is accessible 24/7 after the module started. Live Sessions are recorded and uploaded to the online learning platform, in case time-zones prove problematic. 

In what language is the programme offered?

The whole programme is offered in English.

How many credit points are awarded for the "Practices of Sustainable Chemistry" certificate programme?

20 CP.

How long is the study period to earn a certificate?

Due to how the courses timed within the study programme, the study period for the certificate of “Practices of Sustainable Chemistry” is also 3 semesters, but with longer breaks in between modules. 

Is there a time limit for completing the Master's degree?

Yes, you can generally exceed the regular study period by four semesters, which exclude periods of sick leave, caregiving or parental leave, and official absences. An official absence can be granted for an additional four academic terms.

What types of examinations are there?

Exams are often portfolio exams, which means that multiple graded assignments during the module are going to make up your final grade. These assignments can, among other, appear in the form of quizzes, essays or presentations.

Is there a fee for the application?

No, there are no fees to pay to apply for the programme. After being admitted to the programme, you will have to accept the study place and pay the semester fees. 

What is the cost of the Master's programme in Sustainable Chemistry/Sustainable Chemistry Management?

The tuition fee of the MBA programme is €14,850 total plus the current semester fee of approximately 210€ per term.

Can the tuition fees be paid in instalments?

Yes, instalments of the tuition fees are possible. You can either pay the 14,850€ at once, pay 4,950€ once a semester, pay 2,475€ every three months or pay in a monthly rate of 990€ for 5 months of each semester.

Are scholarships available at Leuphana University?
