Certificate Safe and Sustainable by Design: Contents
Your qualification in sustainable chemistry
In the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) certificate programme, you will complete a total of three specialist modules. Over two semesters, which can be completed alongside your job, you will acquire extensive interdisciplinary knowledge to incorporate sustainability principles into product design, development and business decisions.
The modules in the Certificate Safe and Sustainable by Design
- Concepts of Sustainable Chemistry (5 CP)
- Resources, Recycling & Circular Economy (5 CP)
- Sustainability Assessment (5 CP)
The modules in the Certificate Safe and Sustainable by Design
Concepts of Sustainable Chemistry (5 CP)
In this module you will deal with the following topics, among others:
- Introduction to Sustainable Chemistry and its role in product design
- Comparison of Green Chemistry and Sustainable Chemistry principles
- Holistic views of chemical products across the life cycle
Resources, Recycling & Circular Economy (5 CP)
This module addresses sustainable resource management through three interconnected phases:
Phase 1: Sustainable Water Management and Circular Water Economy
- Adapted water management strategies to address rising global water demand
- Opportunities and limitations of water reuse within a Circular Water Economy
- Integrating sustainable chemistry and water quality management to reduce micropollutants
Phase 2: Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD)
- Applying SSbD in the development of chemicals, materials, products, and processes
- Conducting safety and sustainability assessments throughout the innovation process
- Linking SSbD to circular economy principles and broader chemistry frameworks, including sustainable materials
Phase 3: Metals, Recycling, and Circular Strategies
- The critical role of metals in clean technologies and climate change mitigation
- Fundamentals of metal supply, demand, price dynamics, and recycling opportunities and challenges
- Circular strategies, policy frameworks, and system-level approaches to sustainable metals management
Sustainability Assessment (5 CP)
In this module you will deal with the following topics, among others:
- Life cycle-based approaches to environmental, social, and economic sustainability
- Fundamentals of LCA, LCC, and Social LCA
- Practical exercises in sustainability modelling and evaluation
