Leuphana strong in educational research: top rankings in THE Ranking 2026
2026-02-06 Leuphana University Lüneburg ranks among the leading universities in northern Germany in the current Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026 in the field of education. The Faculty of Education ranks first in Lower Saxony and second in northern Germany, behind the University of Hamburg.
The internationally renowned ranking confirms Leuphana University's strong position in educational sciences. Research is developing particularly dynamically: The Faculty of Education's research environment is rated significantly higher in the current ranking than before, reflecting Leuphana's increased international visibility in empirical educational research. Research quality and the internationalization of research and teaching have also improved significantly compared to previous years.
"The results show that our consistent focus on developing a strong profile in the field of empirical and internationally relevant educational research is paying off," says Prof. Dr. Marcus Pietsch, Dean of Research at the Faculty of Education. Leuphana is thus positioning itself not only as a strong teaching institution but also increasingly as a visible player in the international research landscape.
These positive ranking results coincide with an important structural milestone: the establishment of the Center for Empirical Educational Research Lower Saxony (ZEB). The ZEB is located at Leuphana University Lüneburg and operated jointly with Leibniz University Hannover. Its aim is to consolidate empirical educational research in Lower Saxony, further develop its methodologies, and strengthen it both nationally and internationally.
The ranking in THE and the establishment of the ZEB underscore Leuphana's role as a leading, internationally networked and regionally effective center for educational research.
