Honorary Doctorates of the School of Mangement and Technology

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Andreas Voßkuhle
At the dies academicus 2019, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Andreas Voßkuhle. With this award, Leuphana honours the former President of the Federal Constitutional Court for his academic work in the field of law and his outstanding contributions to research. Andreas Voßkuhle is one of the most distinguished legal scholars in Germany and has been President of the Federal Constitutional Court between 2010 and 2020. In particular in the field of constitutional and administrative law, he has presented groundbreaking work that has had a lasting impact on legal research. Voßkuhle is also regarded as one of the founders of the so-called new administrative law.

Prof. Dr. Trevor Hastie
At the dies academicus 2018, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Trevor Hastie. He received the honorary doctorate for outstanding achievements in the field of statistical learning. Prof. Dr. Hastie, Professor of Statistics and Data Science at Stanford University, is considered one of the pioneers of Big Data analysis. His research focuses on modelling and prediction problems in biology and genetic research, medicine and industry. In his acceptance speech Hastie recalls his academic fathers, some of whom came from Germany.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Ann-Kristin Achleitner
At the dies academicus 2017, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Dr. Ann-Kristin Achleitner for outstanding achievements in the field of Entrepreneurial Finance at the interface of law and economics, such as venture capital financing and family businesses. Prof. Dr. Dr. Ann-Kristin Achleitner holds the Chair of Entrepreneurial Finance at the Technical University of Munich.

Prof. Dr. Helen Nissenbaum
At the dies academicus 2017, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate Dr. rer. pol. h.c. to Prof. Dr. Helen Nissenbaum for outstanding achievements in the field of privacy protection in a networked world to. Prof. Dr. Nissenbaum is Professor of Media, Culture, Communication and Computer Science at New York University and Professor of Information Science at Cornell Tech.

Prof. Dr. em. Paul Davies
At the dies academicus 2016, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate Dr. iur. h.c. . to Prof. em. Dr. Paul Davies. The lawyer Prof. em. Dr. Paul Davies, M.A., LL.M., QC (hon.), FBA, is author of the standard reading of British students of the Company Law "Principles of Modern Company Law" and co-editor and author of the "Anatomy of Corporate Law". From 2009 to 2014 he was Allen & Overy Professor of Corporate Law at the University of Oxford and previously Professor of Commercial Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has received special recognition from the Association of German Corporate Law Specialists and is a frequent guest at symposia in Germany. He promotes the dialogue between the different worlds of German civil law corporate law and English common law corporate law.

Prof. Dr. iur. Jürgen Schwarze
At the dies academicus 2015, the Faculty of Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate Prof. Dr. iur. Jürgen Schwarze, former Professor of German and Foreign Public Law, European and International Law at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg i. Brsg., who is one of the most distinguished jurists in the fields of European constitutional and administrative law as well as European commercial law. Some of his publications were based on his qualifications, such as his work on European administrative law. The focus of his work is always on linking the legal traditions of the member states with European law, whereby a pronounced dogmatic approach is always combined with legal-political considerations. For many years he was chairman of the Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft für Europarecht, the Gesellschaft für Rechtsvergleichung and the Fédération Internationale por le droit européen. He has held chairs at the University of Hamburg and the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence and is an honorary doctor of the University of Athens and Honorary Bencher of the Inner Temple, London.

Prof. Deborah R. Hensler, Ph.D.
At the dies academicus 2014, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Deborah R. Hensler, Ph.D. in recognition of achievements in the field of empirical studies of the legal system. Prof. Deborah R. Hensler, Ph.D., is Judge John W. Ford Professor of Dispute Resolution at Stanford Law School, Associate Dean for Advanced Degree Programs and Director of Law and Policy Lab. She is one of the leading scholars in the field of civil law and in the empirical study of legal proceedings.

Prof. Dr. Per Erik Lage Davidsson
At the dies academicus 2013, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to the Swedish scientist Prof. Dr. Per Erik Lage Davidsson. Prof. Dr. Davidsson is a business economist and business psychologist and has held the Chair of Entrepreneurship at Jönköping International Business School since 1996. He is also Professor and Director of the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. The central research topic of Prof. Dr. Davidsson is the investigation of start-ups, where he is particularly concerned with the question of how "opportunities" can be used for entrepreneurship and how entrepreneurial opportunities can be realized.

 

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Basedow LL.M. (Harvard University)
At the dies academicus 2012, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c..Jürgen Basedow LL.M (Harvard University), who has been Director of the Max Planck Institute for Private Law in Hamburg since 1997. With his comprehensive basic legal research, Jürgen Basedow shapes the scientific discourse in central business-oriented fields of law.

Prof. Dr. Carl Baudenbacher
At the dies academicus 2012, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Carl Baudenbacher, Director of the Institute for European and International Business Law, University of St. Gallen, and since 2003 President of the Court of Justice of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Karsten Schmidt
At the dies academicus 2012, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Karsten Schmidt, who is one of the leading researchers in the fields of civil law, commercial law, corporate law, insolvency law, competition law and antitrust law and was President of the Bucerius Law School - Hochschule für Rechtswissenschaft in Hamburg.

Prof. Dr. em. Olaf Fisscher
In 2009, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Olaf Fisscher. In the field of business ethics, Fisscher developed a personal view of organizations. With regard to corporate social responsibility, he cited the fascinating concept of eccentricity, which refers to the ability of organizations to view their own behavior from the outside. Like people, his approach says, organizations must develop their ability to act creatively and responsibly. Olaf Fisscher is Professor of Organization Theory and Business and Corporate Ethics at the University of Twente (Netherlands).

 

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. rer. nat. h.c. mult. Karlheinz Brandenburg
In 2009, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. rer. nat. h.c. mult. Karlheinz Brandenburg. The electrical engineer Prof. Dr. Karlheinz Brandenburg, the algorithm architect of the MP3 player format, was honored for his extraordinary contributions to digital audio coding and its successful establishment in practice. In addition to audio coding, Karlheinz Brandenburg is intensively involved in perceptual measurement, wave field synthesis and psychoacoustics. Karlheinz Brandenburg is Professor for Electronic Media Technology at the TU Ilmenau.

Prof. Dr. Joachim Möller
In 2008, the Faculty of Management and Technology and awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Joachim Möller. Joachim Möller habilitated at the University of Constance in 1990. One year later he accepted a call from the University of Regensburg for the professorship of economics, which he still holds today. In the meantime, he represented the Chair of Economics, especially Macroeconomic Theory, at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald. Since 2007 Joachim Möller has been Director of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) of the Federal Employment Agency (BA).

Prof. Dr. Margit Osterloh
In 2007, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Margit Osterloh. In 1990 Margit Osterloh habilitated at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Before accepting a call to the University of Zurich, she held an associate professorship in human resources management at the University of Lüneburg. She has been full professor of business administration at the University of Zurich since 1991; she has held various fellowships, including research at the University of Canberra, Australia, at the Institute for Advanced Study Collegeium Budapest and was a visiting professor at the University of Vienna.

Prof. Dr. Maria Luisa Aparicio Gonzalez (†)
In 2004, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr. Maria Aparicio Gonzalez. Dr. Dr. h.c. María Luisa Aparicio González studied law at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, where she was most recently full professor of commercial law. At the University of Madrid, she held various management positions, including in the Law Faculty and as Director of the Commercial Law Department.

Prof. Dr. Edgar Meister
In 2004, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Edgar Meister (Dr. rer. pol. h. c.). From 1970 to 1980, he worked at the Bank für Gemeinwirtschaft before moving to the Board of Management of the Deutsche Pfandbriefanstalt in Wiesbaden. From 1993 Edgar Meister was Minister of Finance of the State Government of Rhineland-Palatinate. From October 1993 he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Deutsche Bundesbank, where he took over the department "Banks, Minimum Reserves, Main Treasury". Edgar Meister was subsequently Chairman of the Banking Supervision Committee of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).

 

Prof. Dr. J. F. Volrad Deneke (†)
In 1996, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. J. F. Volrad Deneke in recognition of his overall scientific work, especially in the fields of Sociology of Liberal Professions; Health and Social Policy; History of Medicine; Medical Journalism, Medical Sociology; Economic and Social Sciences, Economic Policy, as well as his active support in founding the Research Institute Liberal Professions (FFB) of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences.

 

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Lücke
In 1992, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Lücke (Dr. h. c.). From 1962 until his retirement, Wolfgang Lücke was Professor of Business Administration at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen and Director of the Institute for Business Production and Investment Research there. In 1995 Lücke was the founding president of the Private University of Applied Sciences Göttingen. In addition, Wolfgang Lücke has been Director of Studies at the Göttingen Academy of Administration and Business Administration since 1977.

 

Prof. Dr. Günter Wöhe (†)
In 1989, the Faculty of Management and Technology awarded an honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. Günter Wöhe (Dr. rer. pol.). In 1958 Günther Wöhe habilitated at the University of Würzburg. From 1960 to 1992, he was Professor of Business Administration, in particular Business Taxation and Auditing and Trusteeship, at Saarland University and was Director of the corresponding institute.
