Digital Transformation and Data Science

Society and economy are currently undergoing a dramatic change that is frequently coined as digitalization or digital transformation. Rooted in the fast-paced development of IT and IT-mega trends like Big Data, Cloud, Internet of Things and Smart Technologies, Mobile, Social Media, organisations undergo a significant change.

By adopting the technologies in their daily routines, citizens, consumers and employees change their behavior. For enterprises, new opportunities arise to increase both efficiency and the level of automation as well as to provide new digital services to their customers leading to multiple effects for society. Large international companies as well as innovative start-ups are continuously developing new business models, thus challenging incumbent enterprises in different sectors.

The Faculty at the School of Management and Technology focuses on Digital Transformation and Data Science to empirically investigate and reflect on the changes taking place in businesses and society. The insights gained are taken as the basis for developing new concepts, systems, strategies and innovations for responsibly shaping the digital transformation. While advancing knowledge in this field through scientific publications, we also engage with society and enterprises locally and globally.

Research Agenda

IT megatrends such as Big Data, the Cloud, Internet of Things and Smart Technologies, as well as Mobile and Social media, have dramatically changed our lives, but they also offer the opportunity for sustainable change.

On the one hand, we look at the introduction of technologies, automation potential, changing usage habits and the overall transformation of strategies and organisations. Through our disciplinary and interdisciplinary research projects, we develop a deeper understanding of phenomena of digital transformation. They open up space for innovations and also start-ups.

Based on the latest research in data science and artificial intelligence, we also expand knowledge in these areas and support organisations in becoming data- and AI-driven.
Our research priorities include as well Industry 4.0, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, e-mental health, e-business, e-commerce, online marketing, knowledge management and e-learning.
