Peer Mentoring Program

The School of Management and Technology is launching a peer mentoring program for first-semester international master's students for the 2026/27 winter semester.

In the peer mentoring program, international students receive guidance on an equal footing

The Challenge

International master’s students, in particular, face the challenge of juggling several tasks at once when they begin their studies: They must understand how the program is organized, the exam system, teaching and communication cultures, university responsibilities, and life in Lüneburg. Even though much of the relevant information is formally available, they naturally lack practical experience, connections with other students, and, as a result, a sense of belonging.

The Solution

The peer mentoring program for international master’s students in their first semester: Upperclassmen provide international students with guidance on an equal footing, without taking on the role of academic tutors or advisors.

The goal is to offer new students low-barrier support as they settle into their studies, the faculty, and the university; to make implicit academic knowledge accessible; and to strengthen cohort cohesion within the programs.

The Process

From October through February, five facilitated meetings are held for each of the master’s programs. Student mentors prepare the peer sessions, which address relevant topics such as initial orientation, organizing your studies, the teaching culture, everyday questions about life in Germany and Lüneburg, and practical advice based on experiences during the exam period.

At the same time, “Mensa Monday” takes place during the first ten weeks of the semester, providing international students with a regular, reliable, and easy way to meet their mentors.

The program complements existing central services such as academic advising or the International Center’s Buddy Program, but does not replace them.

Become a Mentor

As a peer mentor, you’ll help first-semester students – especially international students – find their way around their degree program, Leuphana University, and life in Lüneburg. Peer mentoring does not include subject-specific tutoring or formal academic advising.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Communicating with mentees
  • Preparing and facilitating peer sessions
  • Attending Mensa Monday
  • Sharing practical knowledge about organizing your studies and academic culture
  • Referring students to the appropriate departments for more complex questions
  • Providing brief feedback to the Graduate School and program coordinators on recurring issues

If you’d like to share your personal experiences, offer practical tips, and foster interaction within the new cohort, please apply for the SHK position as a Student Peer Mentor for the master’s program!
