Inter- and Transdisciplinary Sustainability Research

Inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability research is a problem- and solution-oriented field that strives to combine scientific and practice-oriented knowledge with actions for a sustainable future.

The transdisciplinary research approach of the Faculty of Sustainability is characterized by three central aspects:

  • a consistent orientation towards sustainability-relevant problems and issues;
  • a theoretically and methodologically sound approach to these issues; and
  • the organization of joint learning processes with an intensive, reciprocal exchange between scientists from different disciplines and stakeholders from politics, business and civil society.

A core element of transdisciplinary sustainability research is the design and further development of various interfaces, including those between human, natural and technical sciences; science and society; qualitative and quantitative research as well as different human and environmental systems.
