Federal Environment Minister reappoints Claudia Kemfert to the Expert Council
2024-02-28 Lüneburg/Berlin. At the suggestion of Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke, the Federal Cabinet has reappointed all current members of the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU). Among them is Professor Claudia Kemfert from Leuphana University Lüneburg. The expert in energy economics and energy policy will be a member of the seven-member body for a further four years. The next term of office begins on 1 July 2024.
"I am delighted to have been reappointed to the Expert Council. It will be a great pleasure and honour for me to continue working with the other Council members on important topics in the field of the environment and climate protection and to advise the Federal Government," commented the scientist on her appointment to her third term of office.
The seven members of the Council represent different disciplines and have specialised scientific knowledge and experience in environmental protection. Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke: "We need reliable, critical policy advice on a scientific basis, especially in these times. This is what the SRU stands for. The current Council has done an excellent job and has proven itself in its composition with its integrated working methods."

Background:
The German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) was established in 1971 as a scientific advisory body to the Federal Government on environmental issues and began its work in 1972. The SRU is only bound by the mandate set out in the decree establishing it and is independent in its activities. According to the decree, the SRU is to "assess the current environmental situation and its development trends as well as environmentally relevant political, economic and social activities. It should identify undesirable developments and point out ways of avoiding or eliminating environmental problems". At regular intervals, at least every two years, it prepares expert reports, statements and other written comments on current fundamental and individual environmental policy issues.
