Professor Frese honored with Lifetime Achievement Award
2021-07-13 Lüneburg/New York. Professor Dr. Michael Frese of Leuphana University Lüneburg has now been honored with the annual "Organizational Behavior Division Lifetime Achievement Award" of the U.S. Academy of Management. With this award, the OB Division recognizes senior scholars who have made exceptional disciplinary contributions over the course of their careers. To be eligible for the award, the individual must be a truly outstanding scientist, have published in top journals, and have conducted research that has had a significant impact on the field.
The five-member award committee's tribute states, among other things: “Michael is the quintessential Organizational Behavior (OB) scholar: His intellectual footprint on the science and practice of Organizational Behavior is sizeable. His initial early research on stress at work was among the first in international psychology to point to the importance of psychological stress at work. He subsequently developed action theory, rooted in a more holistic view of human behavior than traditional American theories in industrial-organizational psychology. This foundational work led to his development of the now widely recognized concept of proactive behavior that in turn, is fundamental to job design, self-regulation, organizational change and entrepreneurship among others. He has remained a trailblazer in his research, continuing on to do research in error management, innovation, passion and personal initiative. Overall, Michael has been an extremely productive researcher – he has written 170 articles in peer reviewed journals as well as approximately 200 chapters in books, and he has published or edited about 30 books and special issues."
Michael Frese has been a professor of psychology with a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation at Leuphana since August 2009. This is also where his research interests lie. Well-known are his longitudinal studies on, among other things, the psychological effects of unemployment, stress effects at work, and his field studies on error culture. His large-scale studies on poverty reduction in developing countries through an improved entrepreneurial mindset have also received much attention. Frese has been a member of the Leopoldina National Academy of Sciences since 2014.
