Science blog explains ecological research

2025-06-25 Ecology is often perceived as complex. On the website “Ecologically speaking,” researchers and students write about the consequences of climate change and species loss in a way that is easy to understand.

“We are currently losing species faster than at the time of the dinosaurs,” says Prof. Dr. Vicky Temperton, Professor of Ecosystem Functioning and Services.

“This work benefits me in my studies and I am learning a lot about research at the Ecology Institute,” says Greta Bindernagel.

“We are currently losing species faster than at the time of the dinosaurs,” says Prof. Dr. Vicky Temperton, Professor of Ecosystem Functioning and Services. That is why scientists at the Institute of Ecology have launched a blog: “We want to use this format to make our research findings accessible to the interested public in a way that is easy to understand. We need to talk about biodiversity loss and climate protection and how the two interact,” explains the ecologist.

The EU regulation on nature restoration has just come into force. “The member states must now enforce these requirements,” adds the scientist. In addition to her research, the professor has been supervising student research projects on campus and in the Lüneburg area for many years: “This data also shows that more and more species are disappearing from our native habitats.”

Greta Bindernagel is also part of the blog team. She is studying Environmental and Sustainability Studies: "I benefit from this work for my studies and learn a lot about research at the Ecology Institute. It is important to me to be able to contribute to a format that makes scientific work and results understandable for everyone—both students and people outside the university. Science communication plays an essential role in times of multiple crises: it creates transparency and trust and enables scientific findings to be incorporated into political discourse."
