Francisca “Chiquinha” Gonzaga was Brazil's first professional musician and paved the way for many women in South America. Noam Carmon and her four-piece ensemble tell her story in Leuphana's central building. The staged performance brings rarely heard music and songs to the stage. “The choro style originated in 19th-century Brazil from the encounter of European harmonies and melodies with African rhythms,” explains Noam Carmon. On this evening, clarinet, percussion, voice and piano can be heard.

The Israeli musician is a guest at Leuphana for a year as Artist in Residence. Noam Carmon is active in the areas of classical, world, jazz and pop, has played at international festivals such as the Lucerne Festival, regularly works with theaters and dancers, and has performed with choreographer John Neumeier and classical music stars Thomas Hampson and Zubin Mehta. She not only enriches concert life at Leuphana: Noam Carmon regularly rehearses with students. In particular, she teaches improvisation: “The students have often enjoyed a classical education. Free play was less taught.”

Noam Carmon will not only be on stage in the central building with her own ensemble: she will also be performing with students at the Winter Picnics. In a relaxed atmosphere, visitors can eat food they have brought with them, listen to music and chat. Music Director Rebecca Lang developed the format: “We want to enrich Lüneburg's exciting cultural program with our own touch,” explains the graduate conductor. In addition to the picnic concerts, this also includes programs that cross genre boundaries, such as the semester-ending concert next year: “We will play Fanny Hensel, Max Bruch and pieces from Bridgerton to Katy Perry,” says Rebecca Lang.

The Winter Picnics in December will be opened by the University Choir, which will perform works by Mozart, Alicia Keys, and Billie Holiday, among others. On the second evening, the orchestra and chamber orchestra will play, and Noam Carmon and Rebecca Lang will also perform music by Clara Schumann. The third evening will be hosted by the chamber choir and the big band. “It will be loud and fun,” promises Rebecca Lang.
