Leuphana ecologist contributes with UN decade guideline
2024-06-27 Biologist Dr Emanuela W. A. Weidlich is one of the authors of the "Standards of Practice to Guide Ecosystem Restoration: A Contribution to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration". The guide was developed by members of the SER (Society for Ecological Restoration), FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), and the IUCN CEM (Commission on Ecosystem Management of the International Union for Conservation of Nature ) in cooperation with 22 organizations.
The United Nations (UN) proclaimed the years 2021-2030 for ecosystem restoration. The UN is urging the world to protect ecosystems and restore degraded systems. The UN Decade partners have proposed ten principles for ecosystem restoration to create a shared vision and increase the likelihood of achieving the highest possible level of recovery.
Ecologist Dr Emanuela W. A. Weidlich was one of the 24 authors who drew up guidelines with recommendations for the restoration of ecosystems. They concern, for example, the planning and implementation of measures as well as communication: "We have to bring our research results to practitioners, otherwise nothing will change," explains Emanuela W. A. Weidlich.
Emanuela W. A. Weidlich studied biology in Brazil, completed her doctorate on Natural Sciences at Leuphana and currently works in the Institute of Ecology at Leuphana. She has more than 10 years of experience in applied ecology, and is one of the at large directors of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER).
