MWK project "Students support language learning" (S3) has started

2022-11-08 Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Astrid Neumann, the project "Students Support Language Learning" (S3), funded by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony, has started. S3 is part of teacher training-related professionalisation offers in the field of German as a second language and heterogeneity at Leuphana University Lüneburg. It responds with an updated service-learning offer to the noticeable needs of schools and extracurricular institutions in the city and district of Lüneburg since the arrival of refugee Ukrainian children and young people.

The S3 project brings together interested students and people learning German as a second language to form a learning community. It draws on the existing network of practice partners of the Institute for German Language and Literature and its Didactics. This valuable cooperation makes it possible to bring challenges from practice into university teaching-learning spaces.

Students are supported with preparatory workshops, (peer) feedback, help in planning lessons and selecting materials, and a wide range of opportunities for reflection in the specialist language library. Some of the events are also open to the practice partners. These support services serve to ensure the quality of the language learning opportunities and combine theory and practice.

Aims of this project

  • Individual support for refugee pupils during their start in schools and extracurricular institutions in the city and district of Lüneburg by student teachers,
  • The sustainable further development of qualification offers for student teachers at Leuphana University in the area of German as a second language, heterogeneity and migration,
  • the support of schools and teachers in practice by students trained in language education.
