Career Cornerstones: Active Career Building in Academia and Business

Goals:

Participants learn about career challenges in particular for academic, but also industrial career tracks. They will reflect on their existing competence development, compare the current status with published expections, and think about a personal skill development scheme. Furthermore, the competency knowledge will be used to reflect and challenge the self-presentation in resumes/CVs enabling them to prepare convincing application documents. In addition, the participants analyze their networks and networking activities under consideration of career building strategies.

Content Outline:

Every career is built on a variety of different factors. Despite the conviction that expert recognition is the main part of an academic or industry career, it is now commonly recognized that awareness of career paths, career hurdles, and a convincing self-presentation are musts for career planning activities. In this workshop we discuss open and hidden career elements, reflect about acquired competencies and future challenges, clarify expectations of different markets for self-presentations in application documents, and anticipate professional futures.

Methods:

Theoretical inputs and plenum discussions are followed by group and individual exercises. Participants receive structured feedback and learn about collegial consultancy.

The participants will be asked to bring their up-to-date curriculum vitae to the workshop.

Trainer:

Dr. Monika Clausen

Dr. Monika Clausen, trainer and coach for industrial partners, university clients and individuals. She offers her own training curriculum covering a broad spectrum of career related topics, bringing in a rich and manifold professional background (head of shared services center, head hunter, postdoc fellow at ETH and University of Zurich, PhD plant science at the Salk Institute in San Diego).

This workshop is offered by the Graduate Academy for Technology and Innovation at Hamburg University of Technology. Due to a cooperation, two seats may be given to doctoral candidates of Leuphana University of Lüneburg.
