MBA Sustainable Chemistry Management: Course Content
The MBA programme Sustainable Chemistry Management allows high flexibility and is designed to match the schedule of full-time professionals. All programme courses and seminars are taught in English. In three semesters, you will attend modules on the following topics. Modules F1-F4 are hosted by the Centre for Sustainability Management, modules F5-F8 are hosted by the Institute for Sustainable Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry.
Theoretical modules
F1 Principles of Sustainability Management (5 CP)
In this first module of the programme you learn principles of sustainable development and are introduced to sustainability management, strategic management & sustainable business development and concepts & instruments of sustainability management.
F2 Perspectives of Sustainability Management (5 CP)
In this module you learn about market-oriented sustainability management, standards & norms of sustainability management, cooperative sustainabil-ity management, politics of corporate sustainability management. By attaining a holistic view of different factors influencing sustainability manage-ment, you cultivate skills to tune into the complexity of managing change for sustainable development.
F3 Conditions for Sustainability Management (5 CP)
Expanding on your knowledge of the previous two modules, you are introduced to economic, political, cultural, legal & technological conditions for sus-tainability management and are provided with the foundations for sustainability-based decision making in various sectors and settings.
F4 Applied Sustainability Management (5 CP)
The content of this module is designed to allow practical implementation of lessons learnt in the modules F1-F3. You are presented with practical cases of sustainability management, concepts & instruments of sustainability management. Moreover, you develop a method case for sustainability man-agement in practice, including among others methods of inter- & transdisciplinarity.
F5 Concepts of Sustainable Chemistry (5 CP)
In this introductory module, you are introduced to the link between the practice of chemistry in the socio-economy and sustainable development. You learn about current trends, how the terms “green” and “sustainable” relate to each other, and how they relate to sustainable development.
F6 Resources, Recycling and Circular Economy (5 CP)
This module gives a unique overview of the availability and characteristics of mineral, biological and fossil resources that are the material basis for value creation and consumption in the socio-economy. In light of resource scarcity and climate change, strategies are presented to reduce material and product flows, implement recycling practices and transition from linear to circular value creation.
F7 Regulations and International Conventions (5 CP)
This module introduces you to regulations and international conventions for chemicals management and product design relevant to the socio-economic practice of chemistry. Case studies of implementation in specific sectors are presented together with discussing the potential of regulatory framing as driver for change.
F8 Tools for Sustainable Chemistry (5 CP)
In this module, you are presented with assessment and strategic tools for applied sustainability-oriented decision making in the chemical and related sectors. Content is geared to prepare you for practical exploration and implementation of the themes of the programme within your Master’s thesis and beyond.
Complementary modules
C3 Society and Responsibility (5 CP)
In this module, which is shared between several master programmes of Leuphana Professional School, you are trained to reflect on leadership and responsibility, ethics and values, and how to translate these into processes and actions of responsible change.
Master's Dissertation
Master's dissertation (15 CP)
In your Master’s thesis, you investigate current and future contributions of the practice of chemistry for sustainable development in a topic of your choice. Ideas for topics can stem from any module of the programme, or may be chosen from your individual professional work context. Thesis results are presented and discussed in plenary at the end of the programme. Your final grade is composed of grades for course assignments and your thesis.
