An Introduction to Teaching Statements

As defined on the website of the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, a “teaching statement (or teaching philosophy) describes your core beliefs about teaching and learning and provides concrete examples of how they are implemented in the classroom.” Teaching statements are commonly requested by hiring committees in the United States, and many European institutions of higher learning have begun to follow suit. Instructors also often add these statements to their university and/or professional websites to convey, to several different audiences, their commitment to excellence in teaching. In this workshop, you will not only learn more this important genre, for example by analyzing authentic examples, but also begin to work on the first draft of your teaching statement. At the end of the workshop, you will be familiar with the conventions and several options for creating a convincing teaching statement, and you will have a basic draft of this important document.
