Narrative Nonfiction Writing

Dozent/in: Sabrina Völz

wöchentlich | Dienstag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 6.026 Seminarraum

Until recently, narrative nonfiction writing was often seen as the stepchild of literary studies. As a result of the internet, blogging, Twitter, and the growing interest in the daily lives of people in general, narrative nonfiction writing is booming. Increasingly more attention is being given to groups whose voices have not been elevated much. In this project-oriented class, students will be introduced to life writing and techniques writers of non-fiction use to tell their own stories. Moreover, students will explore the genre by closely reading a variety of nonfictional texts and stories. In particular, students will choose between Funny in Farsi: A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America (2003) by Firoozeh DuMas, and Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots (2012) by Deborah Feldman as the main text of the seminar. In the second part of the course, students will be mentored on an individual basis and write about their own lives. They will be involved in peer editing and expected to revise their own writing as well as present/read their life writing piece to the class. Students will produce lively audio versions of their stories that will be compiled into a class audiobook. Everyone has a story to tell. What is yours?

Introduction to Ecology

Dozent/in: Sylvia Haider

wöchentlich | Montag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C HS 1

Jane Austen on the Screen

Dozent/in: Emer O'Sullivan

wöchentlich | Dienstag | 08:15 - 09:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 5.325 Seminarraum

Jane Austen (1775-1817), author of six novels renowned for their irony and humour, their depiction of contemporary English social life and also for their underlying serious qualities, would seem an unlikely candidate for the title “hippest pop writer to go to Hollywood”. But this is what she was called after six films of her novels appeared between 1995 and 1997 alone. Altogether some 40 film and tv mini-series adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels, biopics and Jane Austen-themed stories have been made in Hollywood, Bollywood, by the BBC and others. In this seminar we will examine Austen’s novels in context before moving to film and tv adaptions, focussing especially on "Pride and Prejudice", exploring the reasons for the striking and sudden appeal of Austen and her work during and since the mid-1990s and examining different adaptation strategies and foci.

Dozent/in: Ben Hundertmark, Lara Rowitz

The Politics of Us and Them (reading seminar of the books by Jason Stanley) (FSL)

Dozent/in: Tiago Cerqueira Lazier

wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 14:15 - 15:45 | 10.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 14.001 Seminarraum

Our increasingly interconnected world has increased the opportunities for the democratic politics of open-mindedness and fairness to prosper. Yet, the same networks that allowed for human exchange and understanding have also carried forth a vocal backlash. Unashamedly employing misinformation and propaganda tactics, the far-right politics of us and them have gained traction in many countries in Europe and across the globe. As they mount a challenge to the future of democracy, it’s important to understand how they operate. In this reading seminar, we will try to understand how propaganda and the politics of us and them work, what drives their message and how they operate according to Jason Stanley. Stanley is a renowned philosopher at Yale University, who has brought his expertise in language and epistemology to bear on the problem of the surge of far-right politics worldwide. We will read and analyze together two non-technical books Stanley recently published on the topic: “How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them” and “How Propaganda Works”.

Dozent/in: Valérie Le Vot

Chances and Challenges of the Bioeconomy (FSL)

Dozent/in: Daniel Pleißner

wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 12:15 - 13:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 12.107 Seminarraum

Within the framework of the seminar, the concept of bioeconomy will first be worked out together. Based on this, the opportunities and challenges of the bioeconomy in rural and urban areas will be elaborated. The focus will be on current forms of biomass use and future strategies to efficiently use any biomass with the help of "white biotechnology" to meet the needs of the population for food and feed, materials and chemicals, and energy. The advantages and disadvantages of each form of use will be worked out together and the feasibility of implementation in rural and urban areas will be evaluated.

Mobility is the fastest growing sector of the economy worldwide. Parallel to the growing tendencies, the emissions of GHGs and pollutants are also increasing. The consideration of the sustainability at this field iis very different in the World. Many large regions at different continents try to safe the basic mobility for the inhabitands and for supplying the people with goods. Sustainabilty does not play not the same high importance such in Europe. We want to consider the tendency of the mobility according the SDG17 principles. The mobility plays in many goals en important role. We invite professors for giving a lesson in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Cairo, London, Puebla and in Hamburg over Zoom. Two excursions are in the preparation phase: on to VW om Wolfsburg and one to the Hereon Centre in Geesthacht.

Regenerative agriculture transition for sustainable food systems: challenges, levers and practice. (FSL)

Dozent/in: Yann Boulestreau

14-täglich | Mittwoch | 18:15 - 21:45 | 02.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 12.001 Seminarraum

Agriculture is one of the main drivers of major sustainability issues such as biodiversity collapse, climate change, deforestation, reduction in freshwater resources and eutrophication (Campbell et al., 2019). This is rooted in farming practices with severe impacts on the ecosystems, such as the high use of artificial inputs (mineral fertilizer, pesticides), heavy tillage, simplification of the landscape and industrial animal husbandry. Pioneer farmers have developed alternatives agricultural systems for more than 30 years. Regenerative agriculture systems are being more and more promoted, putting forward agricultural practices producing food without or with minimal use of tillage, pesticides and mineral fertilizers. Yet, their ability to feed a growing population is set in question by many actors of the food system. In this course, I will teach students the basics of how agricultural and food systems work, as well as the historical background of how food systems have evolved in the past and why. I will then organize group work to address issues of real food system stakeholders who are seeking to transition to regenerative systems.

Artificial Intelligence Ethics (FSL)

Dozent/in: Johannes Katsarov

14-täglich | Freitag | 10:15 - 13:45 | 05.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 12.112 Seminarraum

Through the availability of big data and computational power, machine learning has revolutionized the way we think about artificial intelligence. Machine learning has created enormous new opportunities, including chatbots that can write better than many humans, self-driving cars, apps that create images, videos and music based on few commands, algorithms that can automatize up to 80% of the work that people have been doing in occupations like banking, and many more. In this seminar, we will consider the ethical opportunities and risks of machine-learning applications looking at a wide spectrum of applications. We will cover (1) opportunities of AI for solving large-scale problems regarding medicine, the environment, economics, discrimination, etc. (2) the dangers of bias and discrimination through AI, (3) the potential of AI for deception and manipulation, (4) potential benefits and risks of relationships with AI programs, (4) machine ethics and the difficulties of training artificial intelligence to make ethical decisions, (5) benefits and risks of algorithms and big data in marketing and politics, and (6) the impact of AI on the world of work. Learning methods will include (a) serious games (digital learning games), (b) the testing of diverse AI applications, (c) the discussion of selected readings and documentaries, (d) self-reflection exercises, (e) discussions and exercises on ethical decision-making related to AI.
