From PhD to Postdoc: An international comparison

What is it like to do a PhD in South Africa, Germany or X? What are the prospects after the PhD? And what does it entail to be an early postdoc in international comparison? In this event, we want to shine light on this transitionary time in a researcher’s career. Starting with a panel discussion, four guests from different countries share their experiences on this phase “in between” – from the end of the PhD to continuing as a postdoctoral fellow and/or a lecturer and finding their way in the academic space and beyond in different roles in the non-academic world.
After the panel discussion, we will use a Think-Pair-Share approach and invite participants to reflect on their own experiences and/or their ideas for this phase, talk about this with another participant, and then share some of their insights in the plenary. This way, we make the best use of the diversity of experiences, inclu­ding speakers as well as participants, and open a space for joint reflection and discussion.

Objectives:

• Learn from others on how they navigate(d) the phase from PhD to PostDoc work and overall professional and personal experiences
• Get to know international differences and commonalities
• Reflect on and discuss your own experiences and/or your ideas for this transitionary phase.
