Steady as You Go! Building Resilience in Communication

Addressees:
This workshop is for FLINTA only, i.e. women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, transgender and agender persons who are doctoral researchers or postdocs who seek skills and tools to improve communication in academia and to develop awareness techniques for emotional resilience in various contexts.

Goals:
Are you stuck in “muddy thinking” patterns? Mindful communication principles can be used as practical and helpful tools in navigating communication during your research process. Mindful communication principles include setting an intention, being fully present, remaining open and non-judgmental, and relating to others with compassion. We will focus specifically on bringing a greater level of awareness to the two major components of communication: listening and speaking.

Content Outline:
• using mindfulness techniques to help achieve specific goals
• managing challenging situations with emotional resilience techniques
• developing self-awareness and self-confidence though role-play and feedback
• clarifying misconceptions and “faulty-thinking” patterns
• understanding and practicing body-mind connections
• using language "tools" for framing and focusing

Methods:
Throughout the workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques, which empower them to speak with purpose and intention. We will also offer feedback to help improve non-verbal communication and strengthen emotional resilience.

Trainer:
Julie Stearns is a professional director and actress with over 20 years of experience in theater skills and productions. She is a lecturer at the University of Duisburg-Essen and Folkwang University of the Arts, and has been working for the impulsplus team since 2011.
