Capacity Calculation

Leuphana University Lueneburg - like all universities under state responsibility - determines for each academic year the admission capacities and the number of study places for degree programmes with restricted admissions. The principle applies that existing capacities are fully utilised, taking into account spatial, material and, in particular, subject-specific and personnel conditions (Niedersächsische Kapazitätsverordnung - KapVO - § 1 Abs. 1).

The admission capacity is calculated on the basis of the number of academic teaching staff and the application of curricular standard values (CNW). The CNW describes the total teaching expenditure required for the proper training of a student in a degree programme, measured in hours of deputisation (KapVO § 13 Para. 1).

The results of the capacity calculations become legally effective or obligatory with the publication of the Admissions Ordinance by the Lower Saxony Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur (MKW)  upon conclusion of the agreement between the university and the ministry on the target number of courses to be offered.

The determination of the maximum numbers by the Quality Development and Accreditation Unit is carried out in consultation with the Dean's Offices and the university management.
